Alton Richard Madsen

Alton Richard Madsen, the son of Hans and Sophia Lauritsen Madsen, was born April 26, 1927, on his parent’s home in Cameron Township north of Audubon, Iowa and died March 16, 2013 at the Exira Care Center in Exira, Iowa at the age of 85 years, 10 months, and 18 days. Alton was baptized and confirmed at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Audubon, Iowa. He attended Melville #8 in rural Audubon through the eighth grade. He then helped operate the family farm and worked for several other area farmers. On March 6, 1955, he was united in marriage to Rebecca Williamson at the First Presbyterian Church in Audubon, Iowa. Five children: Tim, Tom, Mary Jane, Phil, and Roger were born to this union. They moved to a farm east of Audubon in Melville Township where Alton farmed for 22 years. Rebecca died March 28, 1974. On June 16, 1978, he was united in marriage to Barbara Jean Rattenborg at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Audubon. He then was employed with the City of Audubon in April of 1978. He was a meter reader and worked in the street department for 20 years until he retired in 1998. Barb died May 3, 2009. Alton was a member of Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Audubon, Iowa. Alton had a big interest with Farmall Tractors and Ford Vehicles. He enjoyed going to car races and taking daily trips driving around town. But most of all he enjoyed visiting and spending time with his family and friends. Preceding him in death is his wives: Rebecca Madsen and Barbara Madsen; his daughter Mary Jane Spangler; his granddaughter Rebecca Ann Madsen; his parents; his infant brother Kenneth Madsen; his brothers and sister: Emmert Madsen, Einar and wife Dorothy Madsen, and Leona and husband Glen Fulton; and his sister-in-law Betty Madsen. Survivors include his sons: Tim and wife Julia Madsen; Tom and wife Colleen Madsen; Phil Madsen all of Audubon, Iowa; Roger and wife Sarah Madsen of Guthrie Center, Iowa; his step-son Curt Kallesen of Des Moines, Iowa; his step-daughter Karen and husband Rich Andersen of Iowa City, Iowa; his son-in-law Steve and wife Rosie Spangler of Sun City, Arizona; his grandchildren: Travis Madsen of West Des Moines, Iowa; Sophia and husband Kyle Wyatt of St. Paul, Minnesota; Samuel Madsen and Elijah Madsen both of Guthrie Center; his step grandchildren: Matt and wife Erika Weber of Urbandale, Iowa; Nate and wife Miki Weber of Waukee, Iowa; Scott and wife Dani Weber of Cherokee, Iowa; 6 step great grandchildren; his brothers: Harold Madsen of Glidden, Iowa; Maynard and wife Rose Madsen of Audubon; Leo and wife Janice Madsen of Audubon; his brothers-in-law and sister-in-law: Gary and wife Rosemary Williamson of Audubon; Sue and husband Clayton Lewis of Alexandria, Minnesota; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Cemetery:
Interment will be in the Maple Grove Cemetery in Audubon.

Visitation:
The family will meet with friends Monday evening at 6:00 P.M. at the Kessler Funeral Home in Audubon, Iowa.

Service:
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, March 19, 2013, at 2:00 P.M. at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Audubon, Iowa.
