Elaine Marie Sornson

October 12, 1931 — November 17, 2017

Elaine Marie (Mumgaard) Sornson, the daughter of Anders Antonius (Tony) and Eva (Christensen) Mumgaard, was born October 12, 1931, in Audubon, Iowa, and died November 17, 2017, at the Audubon County Memorial Hospital in Audubon, Iowa, at the age of 86 years, 1 month, and 5 days.
Elaine was baptized and confirmed at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Audubon. She attended the Audubon Community Schools where she was active in music, a baton twirler, a cheerleader, and worked for the Audubon Chamber of Commerce. She graduated with the Class of 1949 and then studied at the American Institute of Business in Des Moines, Iowa.
On January 29, 1950, she was united in marriage to Robert Sornson at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Audubon. They were blessed with four children: Judy, Paul, Greg and Jane. Elaine helped Robert operate their farm northeast of Audubon (near Viola Center) where they grew row crops and raised livestock, including a large poultry operation of 8,000 chickens. They sold their farm in 1978 and moved to Audubon. Elaine was an active volunteer through the years for the American Cancer Society and the Audubon Hospital and Friendship Home Auxiliaries. She and Robert helped raise funds for Iowa Public Television for several years as the Audubon County IPTV Fall Festival representatives. Elaine enjoyed time with life-long friends of the "Our Day Out" Club, coffee groups, and the Red Hat Society ladies' many adventures. Elaine and Robert enjoyed traveling and spending time with friends and especially family. She lived her faith as an active member of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church where over the years she sang in the choir, taught Vacation Bible School, participated in Circle and Bible Study groups, assisted with the offering, and many other aspects of the church. Elaine played the piano for the Friendship Home and Exira Care Center residents during OSLC vesper and communion services. Her strong faith and assurance of eternal life never wavered. To her family, the adjectives to describe her are found in Galatians 5:22: the Fruit of the Spirit - love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.
Preceding her in death were her parents, brother Charles Mumgaard, and sisters-in-law Rilla Sornson and Louise Chehak and husband Donald.
Survivors include her husband Robert Sornson of Audubon, Iowa; children Judy and husband Richard Baker of Audubon, Iowa, Paul and wife Deb Sornson of Wichita, Kansas, Greg Sornson of Valrico, Florida, and Jane and husband Robert Weber of Audubon, Iowa; grandchildren Chris (Erika) Baker of Roseville, California, Jill (Preston) Kurtz of Houston, Texas, Eric (Megan) Sornson of Overland Park, Kansas, Amy (Tim) Pile of Wichita, Kansas, Megan Sornson and fiancé Chris Modl of San Diego, California, Rachel Sornson and Chad Strong of Riverview, Florida, Laney Sornson of Valrico, Florida, Ryan Weber of North Liberty, Iowa, Alex Weber of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Jacob Weber of Plano, Texas; great-grandchildren Lauren Baker, Kellen, Mollie and Annie Sornson, Elodie Kurtz, Oliver Pile, and Arlo Strong; brothers-in-law Charles and wife Kathy Sornson of Alamo, Texas, and John and wife Lou Ann Sornson of Warsaw, Missouri; nieces, nephews, other relatives, and many friends.
