George Junior Oakley, the son of George Dewey and Nellie Lucinda Howey Oakley, was born February 15, 1925, at his parents’ home in Leroy Township Audubon County, Iowa and died November 19, 2011, at the Friendship Home in Audubon, Iowa at the age of 86 years, 9 months, and 4 days. George attended the First Christian Church in Audubon and then later as an adult became a member of the First United Methodist Church in Audubon. He attended the Audubon Community Schools graduating with the High School Class of 1943. On August 19, 1943, he enlisted in the U. S. Army Air Force. During his tour of duty he served as an aerial gunner with the 307th Bomb Group 372nd Bomb Squadron and saw action in the Pacific Theater. He was honorably discharged on September 18, 1945, and returned to Audubon. On August 24, 1945, he was united in marriage to Lois Hutchins at the Christian Church in Logan, Iowa. Three children Roxanne, David, and Jill were born to this union. George was employed in the newspaper business in Audubon County for many years. He then was employed by Stone Printing in Carroll, Iowa for over thirty years until he retired in 2009. He was very creative and considered printing an art. George was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Audubon, Iowa. He was a member of Dale Christensen Post No. 4119, V.F.W. and Audubon Post No. 120, American Legion. George enjoyed building and flying radio controlled model airplanes. He liked to golf, bowl, play cards and was an avid reader. He and Lois enjoyed traveling across the United States and wintered in Florida for several years. He enjoyed collecting walnuts, hunting mushrooms and going on picnics. But most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. George was preceded in death by his parents; his sister Dorothy and her husband Frank Schmidt, his brothers James and wife Mary Oakley, Howard Oakley, and Allen Oakley, Sr.; his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Lucille and husband Alfred Baier, Dean Hutchins, Kathy Hutchins, JoAnn Hutchins, Jack Hilsabeck, and Paul Norris. Survivors include his wife Lois Oakley of Audubon, Iowa; his children Roxanne and husband George Meyer of Plymouth, Wisconsin; David and wife Vicky Oakley of Deltona, Florida; Jill and Jay Kazlow of Marietta, Georgia; his grandchildren: Kristin and husband Bill Rooker of Plymouth; Leslie Paulsen of Norcross, Georgia; Michael and wife Vicki Paulsen of Chicago, Illinois; Peter and wife Allison Paulsen of Green Bay, Wisconsin; Anne and husband Scott Sprayberry of Lynn Haven, Florida; Bronwen and husband Sergio Jurado of Casselberry, Florida; Charity and husband Chris Peterson of Deltona; Daniel Oakley of Deltona; Justin and wife Megan Bowman of Pasedena, California; Jordan Kazlow and Jacob Kazlow both of Marietta; his step grandchildren: Jeff Meyer of Minneapolis, Minnesota; Pamela Bell of Escondido, California; 14 great grandchildren; his brother and sister: Norma Norris of Des Moines, Iowa; Lloyd and wife Geneva Oakley of Audubon; his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Janice Oakley of Audubon; Carma Hutchins of Audubon; Frank Hutchins of Booneville, Iowa; Bill and wife Marlene Hutchins of Apache Junction, Arizona; Harold and wife Doris Akers of Exira Iowa; Gary and wife Rhonda Hutchins of Roswell, New Mexico; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Cemetery:
Interment will be in the Maple Grove Cemetery in Audubon, Iowa.
Service:
Funeral services will be conducted by Pastor Jud Stover on Wednesday, November 23. 2011, at 2:00 P.M. at the First United Methodist Church in Audubon, Iowa.
Visitation:
The family will meet with friends Tuesday evening November 22, 2011, from 6:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. at the Kessler Funeral Home in Audubon, Iowa.
