Glen Olsen Christensen

Glen Olsen Christensen, the son of Jens Olsen and Laura (Otzen) Christensen, was born December 21, 1921, at his parents’ home northeast of Hamlin, Iowa and died September 22, 2014, at the Friendship Home in Audubon, Iowa at the age of 92 years, 9 months, and 1 day.
Glen was baptized at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Guthrie County, Iowa and later confirmed at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Kimballton, Iowa. He started school at Hamlin #1 at the age of four and then attended Sharon #1 and Sharon #3. Glen took and passed the 8th grade test in 1934 but lived too far from town to attend High School. He helped operate the family farm until he was 17 and then worked for other farmers. On June 3, 1942, he was inducted into the United States Army. He had basic training at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. On June 7, 1944, he was loaded onto the Queen Mary headed for Europe. Glen was in the D-Day invasion serving with the 7th armored division. They fought their way through France and during the winter of 1944 was involved in the Battle of the Bulge crossing the Rhine river during a black out. He returned to the States in October of 1945 and was honorably discharged on November 3, 1945. Glen returned home and worked for a farmer then in 1947 started farming with his brother Earl on a farm near Viola, Iowa. In 1948 he started farming on his own.
On December 11, 1948, he was united in marriage to Lowene Newell at the Methodist Church in Des Moines, Iowa. Three children Ron, Bruce, and Susan were born to this union. They farmed near Viola until 1958 then rented a farm 5 miles northwest of Audubon which they later purchased in the mid 1960’s. They grew row crops and raised hogs and cattle. They were actively involved in farming for over 57 years before Glen had his farm sale on August 20, 2005. They moved into Audubon in 2011. In November of 2013 Glen moved into the Friendship Home in Audubon.
Glen was a member of Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Audubon, Iowa. He was a life-time member of Audubon Post No. 120, American Legion and Dale Christensen Post No. 4119; V.F.W. Glen was an avid bowler and in his later years took up the game of golf. He enjoyed traveling especially their fishing trips to Minnesota. Next to his family, Glen’s greatest passion was farming and caring for the land.
Glen was preceded in death by his parents; and his brother Earl and wife Isabelle Olsen.
Survivors include his wife Lowene Christensen of Carroll, Iowa; his children Ron and wife Nancy Christensen of Omaha, Nebraska, Bruce Christensen and Deb Layland of Audubon, Iowa, and Sue and husband Jim Weitl of Carroll, Iowa; his grandchildren Jennifer and husband Jason Nagler of Olathe, Kansas, Jeff and wife Lindsay Christensen of Omaha, Nebraska, Traci and husband Chad Nimmo and Trisha and husband David Oberhoffer all of Adel, Iowa, Tiffany and husband Benjamin Dudley of Rochester, Minnesota, Angie Weitl of Carroll, Iowa, and Cory Weitl and fiancé Danielle King of Roselle, Iowa; 11 great grandchildren, his brother Lester and wife Mary Ann Olsen of Vail, Iowa; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
