Hazel Elizabeth Conrad

Hazel Elizabeth Conrad, the daughter of Charles Sherman and Clare Anna Wiley Newell, was born April 5, 1916, at her parents home in Lincoln Township, Audubon County, Iowa and died June 19, 2009, at the Audubon County Memorial Hospital in Audubon, Iowa at the age of 93 years, 2 months and 14 days.
Hazel was baptized in the Christian Church in Audubon, Iowa. She attended rural schools in Lincoln Township, and then was employed as a hired girl. She worked for several families and worked for August F. Conrad, Sr. caring for his wife.
On January 16, 1940, she was united in marriage to August F. Conrad, Jr. at St. Patricks Catholic Church in Audubon, Iowa. One son, James,was born to this union. They moved to the Conrad Family Farm west of Hamlin, Iowa in Hamlin Township, Audubon County. Hazel worked side by side with August, milking cows, caring for livestock and doing chores. They retired from farming but continued to live on the farm until the summer of 2007 when they moved into Audubon. August moved into the Friendship Home and Hazel lived in the Friendship Village for a short time and then moved into the Friendship Home in 2008.
Hazel was a member of the St. Patricks Catholic Church in Audubon, Iowa. She was a member of the St. Patricks Women and enjoyed quilting with the church women. She taught quilting for many years for the Woodcarvers at Nathanial Hamlin Park. Hazel was well known for her good cooking and baking, especially her pies. She was an excellent marksman with her 4-10 shotgun, chasing rabbits, squirrels and stray tomcats. Hazel enjoyed collecting angels. She belonged to several neighborhood clubs and card clubs. Her favorite card games were pitch and pinochle.

Survivors include her husband: August F. Conrad, Jr. of Audubon, Iowa; her son: James and wife Judy Conrad of Iowa Falls, Iowa; her grandsons: Dr.Corey and wife Colleen Conrad and their daughter Camryn of West Des Moines, Iowa; Brock Conrad of Chicago, Illinois; her sister: Helen Hall of Hemet, California; her brother: Samuel and wife Marvel Newell of Jefferson, Iowa; her sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law: Lois Newell of Bentonville, Arkansas; Marge Newell of Hemet; Arthur and wife Georgia Conrad of Racine, Wisconsin; Rose Marie Denmark of Huntsville, Alabama; her long time friend: Dorothy Riesberg of Audubon; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Cemetery:
The interment will be in the St. Patricks Catholic Cemetery in Audubon, IA.

Visitation:
The family will meet friends Sunday at 4:00 P.M. with a Scripture Service at 5:00 P.M. at the Kessler Funeral Home in Audubon, IA.

Service:
The Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated by Father Wayne Gubbels on Monday, June 22, 2009 at 10:30 A.M. at the St. Patricks Catholic Church in Audubon, IA.
