John Paul Deist

John Paul Deist, the son of Allison J. and Ollivene F. (Kauffman) Deist, was born July 8, 1940, in Carroll, Iowa and died August 18, 2016, at the Audubon County Memorial Hospital in Audubon, Iowa at the age of 76 years, 1 month, and 10 days.
John was baptized at the Evangelical United Brethren Church in Ross, Iowa and later was confirmed on April 25, 1965 at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Audubon, Iowa. He attended the Gray Consolidated Schools then graduated from the Audubon High School with the Class of 1958. John then attended the Capital City Commercial College in Des Moines, Iowa graduating with a degree in accounting and bookkeeping. On December 30, 1960, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. During his tour of duty he served at the U.S. Naval Station at Charleston, South Carolina. He was honorably discharged on December 16, 1964. He returned to the Audubon area and was employed at the Atlantic State Bank.
On October 9, 1965, he was united in marriage to Carlene David at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Audubon. They were blessed with one daughter, Lana. John then was employed at Olsen’s Grocery Store in Audubon for a short time, then worked as a salesman for Moormans Manufacturing for a couple years. He was employed by Bostrum Studio in Atlantic where he worked in the photo lab. John worked for Talbot Carlson Inc. for a few years and then was an assistant manager at the Viking Inn north of Atlantic for several years. John then started his own painting and refinishing business which he operated until he retired. He has been employed part time at Kessler Funeral Homes as a funeral assistant for the past seven years.
John was a member of Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Audubon and sang in the choir for many years. He enjoyed gardening and walking and caring for neighborhood dogs. John enjoyed people and spent many hours visiting with his friends.
Preceding him in death were his parents, his sister Mary and husband Roger Winther; and his brothers-in-law Lyle David and Walt Lage.
Survivors include his wife Carlene Deist of Audubon, Iowa, his daughter Lana and husband Mark Greimann of Huxley, Iowa; his grandchildren Nick Jensen of Audubon, Iowa, Kelsey Jensen of Huxley, Iowa, and Nate Jensen of Audubon, Iowa; his step grandchildren Kelanie Greimann of Richfield, Minnesota, and Brynnan Greimann of Ankeny, Iowa; his brothers and sister Jerry and wife Margie Deist and Ivan Deist all of Audubon, Iowa, and Dottie and husband Dan Brownsburger of Oakland, Iowa; his sisters-in-law Ardith Lage of Manning, Iowa, Colleen David of Glidden, Iowa, and Diana Deist of Audubon, Iowa; nieces, nephews other relatives and many friends.
Funeral services will be conducted by Pastor Doug Opp on Monday, August 22, 2016 at 2:00 P.M. at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Audubon, Iowa. Interment will be in the Maple Grove Cemetery in Audubon. The casket bearers will be Brian Lage, Lance Lage, Matt David, Chad Deist, Ryan Brownsburger, and Robert Winther. The family will meet friends on Sunday, August 21, 2016, from 3:00 P.M. until 6:00 P.M. at the Kessler Funeral in Audubon, Iowa.
