Lorraine Larsen

Lorraine Larsen, the daughter of Chris H. and Anna (Hansen) Jensen, was born November 5, 1918, at her parents’ home in Leroy Township, Audubon County, Iowa and died January 10, 2013, at the Friendship Home in Audubon, Iowa at the age of 94 years, 2 months, and 5 days. Lorraine was baptized and confirmed at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Audubon, Iowa. She attended rural school near Audubon and later was employed as a housekeeper in Omaha, Nebraska. On June 5, 1939, Lorraine was united in marriage to Julius William Boyd Sonksen at the Trinity Lutheran Church northwest of Audubon in Lincoln Township. Two sons, David and James, were born to this union. They farmed in Lincoln Township for many years. They moved to Audubon due to Julius’s health. Julius died April 24, 1948. On June 15, 1952, she was united in marriage to LeRoy Larsen, whose wife had died in 1950 due to injuries from an auto accident. Lorraine welcomed LeRoy’s children Dennis and Jane into her family. They farmed south of Elk Horn for a few years and then moved to Lorraine’s farm northwest of Audubon. They grew grain and raised livestock for many years until they retired in 1982 and moved to Audubon. Lorraine was a member of Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Audubon, Iowa. She enjoyed painting and produced many oil and water color paintings. She also learned to work with ceramics and made several Iowa commemorative plates with her friend Judy Sutcliffe. For Iowa’s State Capitol they made numerous First Lady Dolls commemorating each governor’s wife in her inaugural gown. She also enjoyed making quilts, sewing and knitting. Lorraine was preceded in death by husbands Julius Sonksen and LeRoy Larsen; her parents; and her sister and brother-in-law Ellowene and Herman Christensen. Survivors include her children: David and wife Roberta Sonksen of Fort Dodge, Iowa; James and wife Teri Sonksen of Burlingame, California; Dennis and wife Carol Larsen of Panora, Iowa; Jane and husband Dale Hughes of Edmond, Oklahoma; her grandchildren: Gina and Tony Henderson; Scott and Melody Jorgensen; Robb and Shelli Larsen; Monte and Melinda Jorgensen; Geno Jorgensen; Jason Larsen; Marty and Shea Jorgensen; Scott and Kris Larsen; Cody and Julie Larsen; Dale and Lynette Arens; Andrew and Julie Sonksen; Christopher and Janelle Greiner; Teresa and Jim McFayden; Corrine Ayers; numerous great grandchildren; her sister Leona and husband Elmer Jensen of Strathmore, Alberta, Canada; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
