Lucille Mildred Nelson

Lucille Mildred Nelson, the daughter of Harry O. and Pearl (Hastings) Brewer was born February 28, 1929 at the Atlantic Hospital in Atlantic, Iowa and died February 19, 2022 at the Caring Acres Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Anita, Iowa at the age of 92 years, 11 months, and 21 days.

Lucille attended rural school, Benton Township #3, and then graduated with honors from the Atlantic High School with the Class of 1948. Lucille taught school at Benton Township #3 for several years. She retired from teaching when she got married.

On June 18, 1950, Lucille was united in marriage to John William Nelson at the Disciple Christian Church in Atlantic, Iowa. They were blessed with four children Duane, Lavonne, Kevin, and Carol. Lucille helped John operate their farm south of Brayton where they grew row crops and raised livestock. She always had a large vegetable garden and enjoyed canning the delicious produce every summer. They retired from farming in 2010 and moved into an apartment in Exira. John died April 5, 2014. Lucille continued to live in her apartment before moving to assisted living at the Exira Care Center and later to Caring Acres Nursing and Rehab Center in Anita.

Lucille was a member of the Brayton Lutheran Church. Lucille and John enjoyed camping and were members of the Audubon County Travelers. They attended all the local, district, state and national conventions. Lucille was a wonderful seamstress, loved cooking, but above all enjoyed being involved in all her grandchildren and great grandchildren’s activities.

Preceding her in death was her husband of 63 years, John Nelson; her son, Duane Nelson; her parents; her brother, Lyle and wife Jana Brewer; her sister-in-law, Edna and husband Arlo Heggen; and her brother-in-law, Charles Ferguson.

Survivors include her children: Lavonne and husband Neil Schroeter of Brayton, Iowa, Kevin and wife Candis Nelson of Brayton, Carol and husband Monti Miller of Woodward, Iowa; her daughter-in-law Janet and husband Fred Klute of Atlantic, Iowa; her grandchildren: Sarah Zach and significant other Kelly both of Lake City, Iowa, Eric and wife Mindy Nelson of Walnut, Iowa, Leslie and husband Matt Irwin of Elkhorn, Nebraska, Trevor and wife Rebecca Schroeter of Forest Grove, Oregon, Marissa Miller of Clive, Iowa, Molli and husband Caleb Davis of Clive, Iowa, and Brady Miller of Earlham, Iowa; her step grandchildren: Wade Harris of Dallas Center, Iowa, and Natalie and husband Steve Ritter of Atlantic; her great grandchildren: Nelson and wife Rachel of Anita, Iowa, Meghan and husband Jacob Worman of Mason City, Iowa, Adrian Zach of Lake City, Lane Nelson of Walnut, Ty Nelson of Walnut, and Luci Ann Irwin of Elkhorn, Nebraska; her sister-in-law Olive Ferguson of Wall Lake, Iowa; step great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 26, 2022 at 11:00am at the Kessler Funeral Home in Exira, Iowa. The family requests for those in attendance to please wear a mask. Open visitation will be available on Friday, February 25, 2022 from 8:00am to 8:00pm at the Kessler Funeral Home in Exira. Interment will be in the Oakfield Cemetery east of Brayton. Honorary casket bearers will be Sarah Zach, Leslie Irwin, Marissa Miller, Molli Davis, Meghan Worman, Adrian Zach, Luci Ann Irwin, Lane Nelson and Ty Nelson. Casket bearers will be Eric Nelson, Trevor Schroeter, Brady Miller, Matt Irwin, Caleb Davis and Nelson Zach.

Memorials will be given to the Oakfield Cemetery Association. A luncheon will follow the interment at the Brayton Town Hall.
