Marilyn Lucille Miller

April 27, 1932 — May 8, 2019

Marilyn Lucille Miller, the daughter of Max A. and Gladys W. (Kelley) Nelson, was born April 27, 1932, in Oskaloosa, Iowa, and died May 8, 2019, at the Audubon County Memorial Hospital in Audubon, Iowa, at the age of 87 years and 11 days.
Marilyn graduated from Oskaloosa High School as salutatorian with the class of 1950. Immediately following graduation, she moved with her family to Audubon, Iowa where her dad and uncle opened the Audubon Creamery.
Marilyn spent the summer candling eggs, grading cream, and delivering milk door-to-door. She also became acquainted with many friends in her new hometown. In the fall, she attended Iowa State College (yes, it was a college then, not a university) and joined Kappa Delta Sorority.
On February 10, 1952, she married Richard K. Miller. They became parents of two sons: Stephen Robert and Timothy Richard. Marilyn was a stay-at-home mom until 1963 when she was employed at First State Bank, which later became Audubon State Bank. She first worked in bookkeeping, then served as teller and was later appointed cashier. She loved her job, her co-workers and her customers. She retired in 1997. Marilyn served on the board of directors of the Audubon Golf and Country Club and served as secretary for several years. Marilyn also was a member of the board of the Audubon Chamber of Commerce and served as President.
Marilyn and Rich enjoyed time vacationing at Lake View when the boys were young and later spent vacation time trout fishing at Lake Tannycomo in Missouri. Rich died in December 1980, and a year and half later, her beloved sister, her only sibling, Jeannette, died.
Marilyn enjoyed knitting, quilting, reading, playing golf and working crossword and Sudoku puzzles. She especially enjoyed playing bridge with her friends in her bridge clubs and marathons. She also enjoyed spending time with her “Friday Nite” group. Her family was the best part her life, and she took an interest in all parts of their lives. Marilyn loved cooking for them, always cooking twice the food needed so there would be leftovers for the kids to take home. The grandkids used to say, “When is Grandma Miller cooking?”
Marilyn was a member of First Presbyterian Church and served as Sunday school teacher, bible school teacher, kitchen chairman and deacon. She was a member of P.E.O. chapter BJ in Audubon, having been initiated into chapter IO in Oskaloosa in 1950. She was a den mother when the boys were in Cub Scouts.
Preceding her in death was her husband Rich, her son Tim, her parents, her sister Jeannette and husband Virgil Engelhoven, her in-laws Hans and Dena Miller; her sister-in-law Elaine Miller; and her nephew Dr. Larry Engelhoven.
Survivors include her son Steve and wife Sharon of Audubon, Iowa; her grandchildren Seth Miller of Bellevue, Nebraska, Keely and husband Tim Hartschen of Johnston, Iowa, Max Milller of West Des Moines, Iowa, Scott Miller of Cedar Falls, Iowa and their mother Fayla Cannon of Rowley, Iowa; her great-grandchildren Peyton and Kohen Hartschen of Johnston, Iowa; her nephew Dr. Ed and wife Anita Engelhoven of Sherwood, Arkansas; her nieces Jeanne and husband Chuck Tucker of Sherwood, Arkansas, and Dr. Peggy Engelhoven and husband Matt Donaldson of North Little Rock, Arkansas; her niece-in-law Gail Engelhoven; other relatives and friends.
The family will meet with friends Saturday morning, May 11, 2019, from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service at the First Presbyterian Church in Audubon, Iowa.
