Marjorie Elaine Chambers

Marjorie Elaine Chambers, the daughter of George and Jennie (Speas) Fiscus, was born April 14, 1926, at her parents’ home in Shelby County near Harlan, Iowa and died December 12, 2018, at the Exira Care Center in Exira, Iowa at the age of 92 years, 7 months, and 28 days.
Marjorie was baptized at the Christian Church. Her father over the years worked for area farmers so they lived in Shelby and Audubon Counties. Marjorie attended school in Viola Consolidated School, Corley School, Laurel School in Harlan and graduated from the Harlan High School with the Class of 1943. Following graduation Marjorie was employed as a bookkeeper and salesperson at the Gamble Store. During this time she met her future husband Wayne Chambers.
On August 15, 1948, she was united in marriage to E. Wayne Chambers at her parents’ home in Harlan, Iowa. They were blessed with four children Sandra Rae, Ronald, Thomas, and James. They operated the Sparky’s Standard Service Station in partnership with Al Lambertz and Marjorie was the bookkeeper. They operated the Station until 1950 when Marjorie and Wayne started farming. They rented several farms in the Shelby County area until purchasing a farm near Cuppy’s Grove Cemetery and later purchased the farm east of Hamlin, Iowa. Marjorie helped Wayne operate the farms where they grew row crops and raised livestock. She helped with the chores and also raised chickens along with her family. She always had both a large flower and vegetable gardens. Following Wayne’s death on August 4, 1976, Marjorie continued to live on the farm. In 1978 she worked part-time at the ASCS office in Audubon. In 1979 she began working with Ethel Petersen at the Exira Jacobsen Travel Agency in Exira. From 1982 until 1989 Marjorie operated the Jacobsen Travel Agency in Audubon. After the Audubon Agency closed, Marjorie was a tour guide for the Jacobsen Travel Agency in Carroll, Iowa where she lead tours around the world to Europe, New Zealand, Australia, and her favorite Hawaii. After retiring from operating the travel agency in Audubon, Marjorie occasionally enjoyed domestic tours to Branson, Missouri and other areas. Along with her responsibilities with the travel agency she was always involved with the management of the farming operation, which she continued to do until she moved into the Exira Care Center in 2017.
Marjorie was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Audubon. She was active in the Ladies Circle. She was a member of the Red Hats and was a member of the R & R neighborhood club. She was a member of the I.S.U. Extension Council and Marjorie and Wayne were Charter Members of the Audubon County Pork Producers. Marjorie loved her flower garden and enjoyed crocheting making an afghan for each of her grandchildren.
Preceding her in death was her husband E. Wayne Chambers; and infant daughter Sandra Rae Chambers; her parents; her brother Larry Fiscus; her sister-in-law Ada and husband Don Petersen; her brother-in-law Floyd and wife Kathryn Chambers; and her special companion Alvin Johnson.
Survivors include her sons Ron and wife Paulette Chambers of Panora, Iowa, Tom and wife Candy Chambers of Hamlin, Iowa, and Jim and wife Ann Chambers of Panora, Iowa; her grandchildren Melissa Chambers, Matt and wife Heather Chambers, Bridget Schrader and Jarod Namanny, and Amy Denny and Joel Hoegh all of Audubon, Iowa, Jesse and wife Mindy Burr of Waukee, Iowa, Dustin and wife Jen Burr of Audubon, Iowa, Brent and wife Alison Chambers of Hamlin, Iowa, Samantha and husband Patrick Tasler of Adel, Iowa, Nicole and husband Tyler Cook of Papillion, Nebraska, Meredith and husband Kyle Clymer of Sioux Center, Iowa, Olivia Chambers of Omaha, Nebraska, Chris and wife Abby Chambers of Norwalk, Iowa, Kyle Chambers and Kristina Storm of Ankeny, Iowa, and Amy Chambers of Des Moines, Iowa, 32 great grandchildren; her sister-in-law Linda Fiscus of Sloan, Iowa; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
The family will meet with friends Thursday evening December 13, 2018, at 5:00 p.m. at the Kessler Funeral Home in Audubon, Iowa. Funeral services will be conducted by Pastor Kathy Kluis on Friday afternoon, December 14, 2018, at 2:00 P.M. at the First United Methodist Church in Audubon, Iowa. Interment will be in the Maple Grove Cemetery in Audubon. The honorary casket bearers are Melissa Chambers, Bridget Chambers, Amy Denny, Amy Joo Chambers, Samantha Tasler, Nicole Cook, Meredith Clymer, and Olivia Chambers. The casket bearers are Matt Chambers, Chris Chambers, Kyle Chambers, Brent Chambers, Jesse Burr, and Dustin Burr. The family requests memorials be directed to Relay for Life.
