Phillip Alan Rustvold

March 26, 1957 — January 8, 2020

Phillip Alan “Fly” Rustvold, the son of Harold and Mary Jo (Petersen) Rustvold, was born March 26, 1957, at the Audubon County Memorial Hospital in Audubon, Iowa and died January 8, 2020, at the Mercy Hospital/Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa at the age of 62 years, 9 months, and 12 days.

Phillip was baptized at the First Presbyterian Church in Audubon and confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Audubon. He attended the Audubon Community Schools, graduating with the High School Class of 1975. Following graduation, Phillip worked for Rustvold Construction for several years and was then employed at Talbot-Carlson, Inc. for a number of years.

On December 1, 1984, he was united in marriage to Nancy Heuton at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Audubon. They were blessed with two daughters: Melissa and Whitney. Phillip worked for Car Quest in Audubon for a while until he had severe health issues. He later was able to return to work and was employed as the parts man at the NAPA store in Carroll, Iowa until he had to retire due to his failing health. Phillip has then been doing odd jobs since then.

Phillip was a member of the Audubon Fire Department for more than 25 years. He enjoyed bowling and deer hunting. Phillip was an avid stock car racing fan and was a member of the HRS figure 8 racing team. He enjoyed any type of racing, especially NASCAR. He could always be seen with his constant companion, his dog Harley. But above all, he enjoyed being with his family, especially the grandchildren.

Preceding him in death was his mother, Mary Jo Rustvold; his step-mother, Loretta Rustvold; and his brother, Brian Rustvold.

Survivors include his daughters, Melissa and husband Jack Olberding and Whitney Rustvold, all of Carroll; his grandchildren: Ryan Rustvold, Camdyn Olberding, and Caylee Olberding, all of Carroll; his father, Harold Rustvold of Audubon, Iowa; his sisters: Cynthia Rustvold and Carla and husband Eric Christensen, all of Audubon, Iowa; Jana Burnside of Kansas City, Missouri; and Lindsey and husband Ryan Venteicher of Shawnee, Kansas; his sister-in-law, Rene Rustvold of Audubon; his nieces and nephews: Stacy and husband Dave Fischer of Iowa City, Iowa; Morgen Christensen, Connor Christensen, Braeden Christensen, and Greyson Christensen, all of Audubon; Bennett Burnside and Jameson Burnside, both of Kansas City; Taryn Venteicher and Tenley Venteicher, both of Shawnee; his great-niece, Luna Fischer of Iowa City; as well as other relatives and many friends.

The family will meet with friends on Monday evening, January 13, 2020, from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the Kessler Funeral Home in Audubon, Iowa. Funeral services will be conducted by Pastor Gordon Buchholz on Tuesday morning, January 14, 2020, at 10:30 a.m. at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Audubon, Iowa. Interment will be in the Exira Cemetery in Exira, Iowa. The casket bearers will be Mike Gage, Mike Wede, Eric Christensen, Ryan Venteicher, Dave Fischer, and Ralph Cleveland.
