V. Duane Hilsabeck

June 11, 1934 — December 19, 2014

Virgil Duane Hilsabeck, the son of Virgil Clair and Mae Henrietta (Avey) Hilsabeck, was born June 11, 1934, at his parents’ home in Audubon County near Coon Rapids, Iowa and died December 19, 2014, at the Audubon County Memorial Hospital in Audubon, Iowa at the age of 80 years, 6 months, and 8 days.
Duane was baptized and confirmed at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Audubon, Iowa. He attended several rural schools then graduated from the Audubon High School with the Class of 1953. Duane was employed at the Coast to Coast store in Audubon.
On December 7, 1955, he was united in marriage to Lois Jean Zinke at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Audubon. Duane worked at the Coast to Coast store until he was inducted into the U.S. Army in August of 1956. During his tour of duty he attended basic training in Fort Knox, Kentucky then was stationed for 18 months in Regensburg, Germany with the 11th Armored Calvary, 3rd Battalion, Tank Company. He was honorably discharged in July of 1958 and returned to the Audubon area. Duane and Lois farmed in Audubon County for over 30 years where they raised their three children Greg, Jeff, and Linda. They grew corn, oats, and hay. Duane milked cows, raised hogs, and did custom baling.
Duane was a life-long member of Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Audubon. He was a member of AMVETS Iowa Post #51 and also a member of the Iowa Pork Producers. He liked to hunt, watch football games, refurbish Snapper lawn mowers, square dance, and to spend time with family and friends. Duane and Lois also enjoyed NASCAR racing and were fortunate to attend several races at the Kansas Speedway.
Duane was preceded in death by his parents and his father-in-law and mother-in-law Roy and Hilda Zinke.
Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Lois Hilsabeck of Exira, Iowa; his three children Greg Hilsabeck and fiancée Shannen Bargman of Adel, Iowa, Jeff and wife Tracey Hilsabeck of West Des Moines, Iowa, and Linda and husband Ken Joseph of Lenexa, Kansas; his 7 grandchildren Hilary Hilsabeck of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Hannah Hilsabeck and Hunter Hilsabeck both of Winterset, Iowa, Rachel Hilsabeck of Des Moines, Iowa, Daniel Hilsabeck of Adel, Iowa, Andrew Joseph of Olathe, Kansas, and Derek Joseph of St. Louis, Missouri; his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Shirley and husband Ron Swanson and Rich and wife Sheryl Zinke all of Audubon, Iowa; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
The casket bearers will be Scott Hansen, Brent Hansen, Rick Nielsen, Dan Smith, Phil Elmquist, and Marvin Jo Porsch.
