Wayne Lynn Madsen

Wayne Lynn Madsen, the son of Robert Edward and Barbara Jane Trachsel Madsen, was born May 27, 1952, in Carroll, Iowa and died January 10, 2011, at the Audubon County Memorial Hospital in Audubon, Iowa at the age of 58 years, 7 months, and 13 days.
Wayne was baptized and confirmed at the First United Methodist Church in Audubon, Iowa. He attended the Audubon Community Schools graduating with the high school class of 1970. Wayne then attended Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville, Missouri where he graduated in 1974 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Secondary Education Industrial Technology.
On December 29, 1971, he was united in marriage to Barbara Ann Haner at Our Saviours Lutheran Church in Audubon. Two daughters, Wendi Marie and Robin Kristine were born to this union. Following graduation, Wayne worked for Emmert and Don Christensen Construction Company for a short time helping them build houses. From 1974 through 1975 he was employed at Emmert Manufacturing Company in Audubon as a production manager and sales representative, helping to design, fabricate and promote equipment for farmers. In 1975, Wayne and Barb moved to Denver, Colorado where Wayne was a salesman for Leo Payne Car Dealership for a short time. He then was a production supervisor for Farmers Marketing Association and later became a production supervisor for Samsonite Corporation. While living in Colorado, their first child was born and they decided to return toAudubon in 1979 to be closer to their families and a better education system. When they returned, Wayne worked for his father, who ranMadsen Distributing Company a Pax Livestock equipment distributor. In 1981, Wayne started his own custom manure haulingbusiness - Madsen Pit Cleaning. In 1986, he added portable toilets to his business. Hediscontinuedcustom manure haulingin 1999, but continued working with the portable toilets until he sold that business in 2006. Beginning in December of 1999 Wayne taught 7th-12th grade Industrial Technology at the Exira High School and was also a substitute and later a full time bus driver for the district. In August of 2009, he transferred to the Johnston High School, teaching 10th-12th Industrial Technology and Project Lead the Way, which is a pre-engineering program. In August of 2010, due to hisfight with Acute Myelogenous Leukemia (AML),Wayne was unable to continue teaching and retired.
Wayne was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Audubon, Iowa. Wayne enjoyed people and belonged to several different clubs and organizations including the Big Horn Jeep Club, the AFS student exchange program -hosting students from Norway, Belgium, Italy, and Finland - and the Audubon County Travelers, just to name a few. Wayne enjoyed the water, spending time at Black HawkLake in LakeView,Iowaand later purchasing a home in Two Harbors, Minnesota on Lake Superior. Wayne loved mechanical things, especially things that ran fast and had lots of power. He built his first vehicle, a red Dune Buggy, when he was fourteen. Cars were a passion of his. Wayne often said that he had owned over 50 cars during his life, including fourCorvettes - his favorite.Wayne enjoyed owning and operating his own business, but the true reward of his professional life was the time spent as an instructor and with all of the students that he had the privilege of sharing his knowledge and skills with. Family was everything to Wayne. He truly loved his mother and enjoyed teasing her. He was proud of his girls and their accomplishments and being self-sufficient, but liked it when they would seek advice and give him a Daddy-do list. But, most of all, Waynes best friend and the love of his life was his wife Barbara, with whom he celebrated 39 wonderful years of marriage. Wayne worked hard and loved to play hard, too. He had high standards and expectations. He believed that God was in control of his life, trusted God, and believed God would give him the strength to endure whatever outcome occurred with his AML and stem cell transplant.
Wayne was preceded in death by his father Robert Madsen; his father-in-law Hal Haner; his step-father-in-law Emmert Schmidt, his grandparents Chris and Mary Madsen and Ralph and Vera Trachsel; his uncles Richard Trachsel, Roger Trachsel, Alton Olsen, Edwin Madsen and Marvin Lauridsen; his aunts May Olsen and Ardith (Madsen) Lauridsen; cousins and infant nieces and nephews.
Survivors include his wife Barbara (Haner) Madsen of Audubon, Iowa; his daughters Wendi Madsen and Robin Madsen both of Des Moines, Iowa; his AFS son and daughters Malin Paust and Jonas Varga and their daughters Linnea and Annica of Risor, Norway, Piera Vitali of Bergamo, Italy, Romeo VanGoethemed, Jr of Beringen, Belgium and Johanna Laatunen of Helsinki, Finland; his mother Barbara Jane Madsen of Audubon; his mother-in-law Catherine (Haner) Schmidt of Audubon; sister Sherry Madsen and husband James (Buz) Cavanaugh, Jr of Hamlin; his brothers-in-law Chris and wife Beth Haner of Bouton, Iowa and Dale and wifeCathie Haner of Audubon;step-sister-in-law Glenda and husband Giff Gardnerof Aurora, Colorado; step-brother-in-law James andwife DanetteSchmidt of Las Vegas, Nevada; many other beloved aunts, uncles,cousins, nieces, nephews and dear friends.

Cemetery:
Interment will be in the Maple Grove Cemetery in Audubon.

Visitation:
The family will meet with friends on Friday evening, January 14, 2011, at 6:00 P.M. at the First United Methodist Church in Audubon, Iowa.

Service:
Funeral services will be conducted by Pastor Jud Stover on Saturday, January 15, 2011, at 10:30 A.M. at the First United Methodist Church in Audubon, Iowa.
