He was born February 1, 1922, on a farm near Walnut, Iowa. Alfred was the son of Henry Carl and Carrie (Schmidt) Koll, one of three children. Alfred was baptized and confirmed in the Evangelical Lutheran Church, now known as Peace United Church of Christ in Walnut, Iowa. He attended country school in Layton Township and then attended high school in Walnut graduating with the class of 1938.
