Alfred E. Steffen, 80, of Atlantic, Iowa, passed away Tuesday, October 23, 2018, at Heritage House in Atlantic.

Alfred was born November 20, 1937, in Hartington, Nebraska, the son of Ernest Carl and Ethel (Coleman) Steffen. He attended school and graduated from Hartington Public High School in 1955. After graduating, he joined the US Army where he served from 1955 – 1957.

After being discharged from the service, he joined the Iowa State Patrol, and served as a State Trooper for 20 years. He then became a restaurant owner in Atlantic. He owned the T&C Drive In and Country Kitchens. Al was also the co-owner and operator of AK Ambulance in Atlantic.

He was a resident of Atlantic and Ottumwa, IA, Osage Beach, MO, and Sun City AZ.

Alfred married Marlys Joan Palmer on March 18, 1972, in Omaha, NE.

He was active in the Elks, Moose, Eagles, American Legion and a member of the Lutheran Church. He enjoyed dancing, woodworking, golfing, bowling and boating. Al enjoyed the times vacationing with Jerry and Connie Wiedenfeld. Family and friends were very important to Al.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Ethel Steffen; his sisters and their husbands, Dorothy and Ray Wiedenfeld and Geraldine and Duane Purcell.

Alfred is survived by his wife, Marlys Steffen of Atlantic, IA; daughters, Cindy Willingham of Atlantic, IA and Karla (Tim) Akers of Anita, IA; grandchildren, Misha Watts of Springfield, Mo, Phillip (Diann) Shull of Columbia, MO, Kara Shull of Manhattan, NY, and Benjamin (Sarah) Shull of Chicago, IL; 9 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, October 27, 2018, at Hockenberry Family Care in Atlantic, Iowa.

There is no scheduled visitation but friends may visit with family at a lunch in Hockenberry’s community room following the service.

There will also be a memorial service at 10:30 a.m., on Saturday, November 3, 2018, at the Wintz Funeral Home in Hartington, NE. Burial with military rites will follow at the Lawn Ridge Cemetery in Coleridge, NE.

Memorials may be left to the family’s wishes to be designated at a later date.
