Alma Margaret Heuss

Alma Margaret Heuss, the daughter of Anton Gustave and Rachel Fern (Hindman) Moeckl, was born January 21, 1920, at her parents’ home near Olivet, South Dakota and died July 21, 2017, at the Audubon County Memorial Hospital in Audubon, Iowa at the age of 97 years and 6 months.
Alma moved to Iowa with her parents on March 1, 1934. She attended school in Gray, Iowa and in 1938 was named an all SW. Iowa guard in basketball. Alma graduated with the Class of 1939 and was a nanny and a housekeeper for various people.
On March 13, 1943, she was united in marriage to Arthur Leroy Heuss at the Assembly of God parsonage in Gray. Alma helped Doctor Jensen by providing in home health care for his patients and helped deliver babies. Doctor Jensen asked Art and Alma to live on his farm east of Audubon and crop share the land and take care of the livestock. They were blessed with four sons Donald, Wayne, Carl, and Steven. In 1952 they purchased a farm northeast of Audubon and in 1992 their granddaughter Annette and husband Randy Bruch purchased the family farm and currently reside there today. Alma was a stay at home mother and helped Art with the farming, whether it was getting fields ready to plant, hauling grain to the elevator in the fall, milking cows, gathering eggs to sell or raising chickens and hogs to butcher. Alma had a love of gardening and always had a large garden plus 3 or 4 smaller ones. She loved to can and freeze the produce and never let anything go to waste. Whenever a grandchild was born, she was always there to lend a helping hand for the new mother and boy did the grandchildren love going to her house to stay. She was a great cook and always had homemade bread, cinnamon rolls and pies among other great things. Alma loved to crochet and made many beautiful baby blankets and afghans. They were members of the Ross Calvary United Methodist Church for many years where she taught Bible School and organized lunches for weddings and funerals. After the boys were raised and the livestock was gone, she helped in the meat department, as a butcher, at the Audubon Super Value grocery store. In 1988 they moved from the farm into Audubon and purchased a house on Tracy Street and became members of the Faith Community Church. Art and Alma enjoyed many trips to Wisconsin to visit relatives and friends. After 61 years of marriage, Art passed away on August 1, 2004. Alma lived in their home until she moved to the Exira Care Center on April 14, 2016.
Preceding her in death in addition to her husband Art, was her son Steven; her parents Anton and Rachel Moeckl; her sisters Helen and husband Edward Puck Sr. and Marlene Richardson; her brother Harold and wife Wilma Jean Moeckl; her daughter-in-law Melody Jolly Heuss and several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law as Art was one of 10 children.
Survivors include her close friend Lester Williamson of Audubon, Iowa who has been a great companion for the past several years, her children Don and wife Jan Heuss of Ames, Iowa, Wayne and wife Karen Heuss of Audubon, Iowa, Carl and wife Susan Heuss of Centennial, Colorado, and daughter-in-law Laurie Heuss of Pleasant Hill, Iowa, her grandchildren Kori Heuss and friend Tim Hansen, Krisha Heuss and husband Christian Blackburn all of Ames, Iowa, Brenda and husband Todd Anderson of Gretna, Nebraska, Annette and husband Randy Bruch, Chad and wife Stacie Heuss all of Audubon, Iowa, Wendy and husband John Hansen of Atlantic, Iowa, Renee and husband Chad Vos, Pastor Anton and wife Leah Heuss all of Plano, Texas, Hope and husband Terry Stephenson of Memphis, Tennessee, Justin and wife Alli Heuss of St. Louis, Missouri, Alissa and husband Mike Fletcher of Denver, Colorado, Dr. Jessica Heuss DVM and husband Joe Gleseke of Mesa, Arizona, Alec Heuss and friend Alyssa Kliefoth, Samantha Heuss and friend Drew McConnell all of Des Moines, Iowa, and Step-Grandson Justin and wife Amy of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania her 23 great grandchildren Emery, Jolie and Aliza Blackburn of Ames, Chelsea and Chase Anderson of Gretna, Cole and wife Sarah and Cody, Ashlie, Rachel and Austin Heuss all of Audubon, Taylor Hansen, Skyler and Josie Handlos of Atlantic, Alexander Vos, Aven and Charis Heuss of Plano, Charlee and Natalee Stephenson of Memphis, Faith and Madelyn Fletcher of Denver, Harper Heuss of St. Louis, Rogan Heuss of Des Moines and Ellie Hartwig of Pittsburgh and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
The family will meet with friends Thursday evening July 27, 2017, at 5:00 P.M. at the Kessler Funeral Home in Audubon, Iowa. Funeral services will be conducted by Pastor Christopher Bozzo on Friday morning, July 28, 2017, at 10:30 A.M. at the Faith Community Church in Audubon, Iowa. Interment will be in the Maple Grove Cemetery in Audubon. The casket bearers will be Christian Blackburn, Todd Anderson, Chad Heuss, John Hansen, Pastor Anton Heuss, Justin Heuss, and Alec Heuss.
