Barry A. Buchanan, 59, of Atlantic, Iowa, passed away June 11, 2006, at his home.
Barry Allison Buchanan was born on September 1, 1946, in Guymon, Oklahoma to Bobby and Willibelle (Smith) Buchanan.
He graduated from Hooker High School in Hooker, Oklahoma, in 1964 and majored in math and statistics at Oklahoma State University, where he graduated in 1969.
In December of 1967 he married Carol Jean Watkins.
Barry worked a variety of jobs in electronics, specializing in Quality Control Engineering. He moved to Atlantic in 1992 to work at Glacier Manufacturing Corporation. Barry most recently worked at The Owls Nest Bookstore in Atlantic.
Barry was a member of the Community of Christ Church. He was active in Kiwanis, NAMI, National Alliance for the Mentally Ill and DBSA. Barry helped organize and lead many mental health support groups, including helping initiate DBSA, the Depression Bi-Polar Support Alliance in southwest Iowa.
He is survived by his daughter, Melanie Bishop and her husband, Mike of Atlantic; son, Greg Buchanan and his wife, Magaly of Fayetteville, Arkansas; mother, Willibelle Parham of Waverly, Iowa; grandchildren, Norrin, Amber, Abbey and Ally (named after her grandpa) Bishop all of Atlantic; seven children of Fayetville, Arkansas, that were very special to him that also called him grandpa; brothers, Ron Buchanan of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Bob Buchanan of Corpus Christi, Texas, Randy Buchanan of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma and Blane Buchanan of Atlantic; and sister, Sherry Nuss of Waverly, Iowa; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Barry is preceded in death by his father, Bobby Lee in 1975.
Public visitation with the family present will be one hour prior to the services beginning at 2:30 p.m.
Barry's family has honored his wishes and he has been cremated. Celebration of Life Services will be 3:30 p.m., Sunday, June 18, 2006, at the Hockenberry Family Care Chapel in Atlantic. Following the services refreshments will be served in the Hockenberry Family Care Community Room.
The family requests memorials to DBSA, which is the Depression Bi-polar Support Alliance or to Kiwanis.
