Benjamin Flathers

July 21, 1956 — October 13, 2017

Ben G. Flathers, born July 21, 1956, lost his battle with cancer at the age of 61, on Friday October 13, 2017, at his home in Atlantic, Iowa.

Ben G. Flathers was born the fifth of eight children to Harley Glen and RoseMary (Stormer) Flathers. He lived in and went to school in the Atlantic and Massena areas. In 1975, he met his soul mate, and in 1980, entered into marriage with Nancy Schmitt. Ben and Nancy’s friendship carried on throughout his journey of health and sickness as Nancy and his sister, Loretta, cared for him in his final days. Ben’s wishes were to be cremated and spread in the East Nishnabotna River so he would float to the ocean.

Ben worked construction becoming passionate about concrete finishing. In the early 1990s he owned and operated a small concrete business, “Ben’s Concrete”. He claimed to be the jack of all trades and the master of none, loved to tinker with things and never gave up till the job was mastered. In 2010, Ben retied due to his health and disabilities.

Ben loved his dog, Bruttius, spent a lot of time spoiling him with rides and treats. His favorite pastimes were hunting bunnies and fishing with his dad, drinking cold beer and playing loud music, was a drummer at heart and spent many hours sweating with those drum sticks in hand.

Ben is survived by his soul mate, Nancy Schmitt, and her family, calling her mother mom; his sisters, Carolyn Wenninghoff of Atlantic, Loretta Roberts of Atlantic, Beth (Jim) Rice of McAlester, OK; his brother, Myron Flathers of Atlantic; sisters-in-law, Dixie Flathers of Lewis and Tammy Flathers of Red Oak; nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews with one of them being very special to him, Jessica Meyer “Jessie Girl”.

Ben is preceded in death by his father and mother; two sisters, Sharon Senger and Angela Duff; a brother, Ray “Dude” Flathers; and many aunts and uncles.

Please join family and friends at 305 Nebraska Street, Lewis, Iowa, home of Dixie Flathers, in honor of Ben at 3:00 p.m., Saturday, October 28, 2017. Special nephew, Bryceton Flathers, will be giving the eulogy.

Feel free to bring a side dish, in a disposable container, to share.

Thank You.
