Bernard Dale Davis, 95, of Atlantic, Iowa, died Friday, March 10, 2017, at the Cass County Memorial Hospital in Atlantic, Iowa.

Bernard was born August 2, 1921, in Washington Township, Adair County, Iowa, to Frederick Leon and Lula Emma (Antisdale) Davis. He attended Washington #7 country school. He worked at home on the farm until he joined the US Army in 1942. He served during World War II in the South Pacific and the Philippines where he was awarded the Purple Heart. After being discharged, he returned home and continued farming.

On December 11, 1948, Bernard married Mary Cynthia Hineline in Greenfield, Iowa. They settled in the Fontanelle/Bridgewater area. In 1958, they moved west of Atlantic where they lived until moving into Atlantic in 1983. In 1995, they moved into their current home.

He was a member of the Odd Fellows and the American Legion. Bernard was a flea market buff and he especially liked his salt and pepper shaker collection.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Howard, Harold, Bill and Wayne; sisters, Irma Edward, Mildred Smith, Lucille Vorrath and Beulah Rafdal; sisters-in-law, Verda Davis, Daisy Davis, Marie Davis and Letha Davis; brothers-in-law, Rex Edward, Marvin Smith and Lawrence Vorrath.

Bernard is survived by his wife, Mary Davis of Atlantic, IA; a son, Bobbie Dale (Roxanna) Davis of Atlantic, IA; grandchildren, Dale Frederick Davis and his fiancé Elizabeth King of Atlantic, IA, Cynthia Joanna Davis of Atlantic, IA; a great-granddaughter, Isabella Davis of Atlantic, IA; a sister, Helen Parkinson of Colorado Springs, CO; a brother-in-law, Elwood Rafdal of Des Moines, IA; and nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 25, 2017, at Hockenberry Family Care in Atlantic, Iowa. Family will visit with friends at a lunch in Hockenberry’s community room following the service.

Burial will be in the Atlantic Cemetery in Atlantic, IA at a later date.
