Carletta Casey

Carletta Anne Casey, 88, of Atlantic, Iowa, passed away Wednesday, October 19, 2016, at the Cass County Memorial Hospital in Atlantic.

Carletta was born June 22, 1928, to Lillie Caroline Storjohann in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Due to circumstances beyond Lillie's control, Lillie was unable to provide for her daughter's care, thus she placed her for adoption with Catholic Charities Adoption Christ Child Home in Des Moines, Iowa. It was there, she was joined by loving parents, Dennis F. and Ida A. Casey.

Carletta was raised on her grandfather's farm, attended rural school, and, Massena High School graduating with the class of 1946.

Following high school, she worked various jobs mainly Massena Telephone Company, Drs. K. M. Dirlam and H. F. Parisi. Upon Dr. Dirlam's retirement, she became a certified Respiratory Care Practioner in Omaha, NE. Following graduation, she organized and directed the first Respiratory department at Laughlin Osteopathic Hospital and Clinic.

She later moved to Pella to be closer to family, working for Pella Community Hospital as associate director. She retired from the Pella hospital in 1996 after serving in the medical field for forty-five years.

After retirement, Carletta enjoyed many bus tours to many parts of the United States. She also enjoyed the many trips to Branson, Missouri, with friends who shared her interests.

Carletta loved nature and animals, especially horses and dogs. In her younger years, she enjoyed horseback riding, biking, bowling, playing cards, and spending time with family and friends. She volunteered at the Pella hospital as well as Cass County Memorial Hospital.

Carletta became active in the Pro-Life movement.

The highlight of her life occurred in 1999 when she discovered she had three brothers. They are: Dean R. Wood, Vern L. Wood and Randy Prokop. They, along with their families, were united in early 2000.

Carletta is a member of SS Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Atlantic, as well as St. Patrick's in Massena, and the National Right to Life.

Carletta moved to Atlantic in 2003 to be near family and friends.

Preceding Carletta in death were her parents and Godson, Joseph V. Casey Jr.

Surviving Carletta are her brothers, Dean R. Wood (friend, Lana) of Aiken, SC, Vern L. (Karen) Wood of Schleswig, IA and Randy C. (Louann) Prokop of Peru, IN; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends; descendants of Joe and Polly Casey; special friends, Rosemary Kopp, Phyllis Marnin and long-time family friend, Mary Rieser.

Visitation with family at the Heritage House will be from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m., Friday, November 4, 2016.

Then on Saturday, November 5, 2016, there will be a prayer service at 9:15 a.m. with a time of visitation with family from 9:30 - 10:30 a.m., with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Massena, IA. Burial will be in St. Patrick's Catholic Cemetery in Massena, Iowa.
