Carolyn Ann Sams

Carolyn Ann Sams, the daughter of Walter and Roma (Hockenberry) Hardwick, was born September 18, 1948, at her parent’s home in Brayton, Iowa and died June 7, 2013, at the Creighton University Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska at the age of 64 years, 8months, and 9 days. Carolyn was baptized and confirmed at the Brayton Lutheran Church in Brayton, Iowa. She attended rural school west of Brayton then attended the Exira Community Schools graduating with the High School Class of 1966. Following graduation, she moved to Des Moines, Iowa where she worked for a short time. Carolyn returned to Exira and in 1969 she was united in marriage to Wade Sams at the Brayton Lutheran Church. Two children Dawn and Quint were born to this union. Carolyn worked at the motel at the Valley where she was employed in the cleaning department for several years. She then was the Librarian and later the Head Librarian at the Exira Public Library in Exira. She was employed at the Library until she had to retire due to her failing health. Since that time, she enjoyed her home and spent many hours gardening. She enjoyed chatting with neighbors, but her true love was gardening. Carolyn was preceded by her parents; her brother Robert Hardwick and her sister Mary and husband Dale Stoner. Survivors include her children Dawn Sams of Exira, Iowa and Quint and wife April Sams of Thornton, Colorado; her grandchildren Aric and Lenaya Sams both of Thornton, Colorado; her nieces Barbara Clevenger of Overland Park, Kansas and Janet Galvin of Leawood, Kansas; her great nieces and great nephews Kathryn Clevenger of Paola, Kansas, Mickey Galvin of Leawood, Kansas, and Robert Galvin of Boynton Beach, Florida; her sister-in-law Margaret Hardwick of Marshville, North Carolina; other relatives, and friends.

Carolyn’s family will be planning a Celebration of Life Memorial Service at a later date.
