Carrie M. Mathisen, 98, of Elk Horn, Iowa, passed away Wednesday, August 16, 2006, at the Cass County Memorial Hospital in Atlantic, Iowa
Karen "Carrie" Mathilde Mathisen was born November 30, 1907, on a farm east of Brayton in Audubon County, Iowa, to parents Niels & Elvine (Sorensen) Nielsen.
Carrie was baptized at the Exira (Iowa) Lutheran Church and confirmed at the Oakhill Lutheran Church. She was raised on a farm and went to country school at the Oakfield Township #7 southwest of Brayton. She worked in Atlantic as a housekeeper and also worked at the Salem Lutheran Home in Elk Horn. Carrie enjoyed cooking, crocheting, reading, spending time with friends, eating out, and tending to her flowers. She dearly loved her family and her church.
Carrie married Harvey Peter Mathisen on January 24, 1929, at her parent's home. They lived their entire married lives in Elk Horn. To this union four daughters were born; Shirley Ann, Lela Mae, Eileen June and Vicki Karen.
Harvey died on April 26, 1966. Carrie continued to live in her home until November 1, 1989, at which time she moved to the four-plex in Elk Horn. In October of 2004 she moved to the Salem Home.
Carrie is survived by her daughters, Shirley Lange of Knoxville, Tennessee, Eileen Sornson and her husband Galen of Exira, and Vicki Leistad and her husband Arnie of Atlantic. Also surviving are her grandchildren, Dennis Lange and his wife Gwen of Knoxville, Tennessee, Dr. Randall Lange and his wife Christy of Knoxville, Tennessee, Frances Lange (Rick) of Lenoir City, Tennessee, Greg Rasmussen, Lori Vande Stouwe and her husband Carter of Grinnell, Iowa, Lana Rasmussen of Grinnell, Brad Sornson and his wife Jeana of Exira, Iowa, Gayleen Rutherford and her husband Kent of Eagle Grove, Iowa, Cory Sornson and his wife Jennifer of Atlantic, Iowa, Nathan Sornson and his wife Libby of Waukee, Iowa, Jason Leistad of Sunriver, Oregon and Jeffrey Leistad of Avon, Colorado. Her surviving great grandchildren include Chad Lange and his wife Jessica, Justin Lange, Jessica Lange, Megan Lange, Rikki Lange, Aaron Rasmussen, Ericka Rasmussen, Zane Rasmussen, Casie Vande Stouwe, Briana Vande Stouwe, Oliver Vande Stouwe, Samantha Sornson, Gage Sornson, Clay Sornson, Alexis Rutherford, Corey Rutherford, Austin Rutherford, Karen Sornson, Rachel Sornson, and great-great grandson Jackson Lange. She is also survived by 3 nieces and 2 nephews and many wonderful friends and neighbors.
Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband Harvey; a daughter, Lela Mae Rasmussen; a sister, Tillie Leander; two brothers, Raymond Nielsen and Harold Nielsen; a grandson, Dr. Richard Lange; a son-in-law, Frank Lange; and a niece, Lois Scarlett and her husband Paul.
Funeral services for Carrie will be Saturday, August 19, 2006, at 10:00 a.m., at the Elk Horn Lutheran Church in Elk Horn, Iowa, with The Reverend Keith Menter officiating. Visitation with the family present will be Friday, August 18th from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m., at Hockenberry Family Care. Burial will be in the Elk Horn Lutheran Cemetery.
