Catherine Elma (Byrum) Koob, age 91 of Atlantic and a former Anita resident, died on Thursday, May 29, 2025, at Allen Place in Atlantic. She was born on April 29, 1934, at her parents’ home east of Adair, IA the daughter of Elmer and Emma (Wedemeyer) Byrum. Catherine attended country school through 8th grade and graduated from Casey High School in 1952.

After graduation, Catherine briefly worked at Blue Cross/Blue Shield in Des Moines. On June 29, 1952, she was united in marriage to Virgil Koob at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Adair, Iowa. They lived in Tampa, FL while Virgil was in the Air Force before coming back to Iowa in 1953 where they lived in Brayton, Iowa until they moved to Anita in 1957.

Catherine was a homemaker and worked several jobs around the community, including working at the Redwood Steakhouse, preschool teacher, making donuts at Casey’s and working at the Pep’s Drive-Inn to name a few. In her spare time, she enjoyed sewing, crocheting, cross-stitching and diamond art. Catherine and Virgil enjoyed traveling with their trailer throughout the United States and especially enjoyed spending their winters in Texas for 15 years. Catherine was an avid card player and enjoyed all card games, especially playing Old Maid with her great grandchildren.

Catherine is survived by her children Linda Smith and husband Max, Rhonda Davidson and husband Bob; her grandchildren Andrea (Dave) Warner, Kenneth (Brooke) Smith, Kimberly (Kevin) Lange and Kathryn (Jake) Wasko along with 9 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Virgil, sisters Phyllis (Jack) Schwab and Alice (Lloyd) Mertes, nephew Dennis Schwab.

Memorial services will be held at 11 am, Tuesday, June 3, 2025 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Atlantic, IA with Rev. Kyle McBee officiating. Visitation will be held an hour before services at the church with the family present. Following the memorial service a luncheon well served in the Zion Fellowship Hall. Memorials can be made in her name and will be designated by the family at a later date.
