Charles Mcafee

August 17, 1936 — March 23, 2020

Charles “Charlie” McAfee, 83, of Anita, IA, passed away Monday, March 23, 2020, at Caring Acres Nursing & Rehab in Anita, Iowa.

Charlie was born south of Anita August 17, 1936, to William D. and Maude M. (Scholl) McAfee. He attended Anita High School. In March of 1959, he joined the US Army and served until February of 1961. On November 9, 1962, he married Janet Newell in Anita, Iowa.

Charlie farmed northeast of Anita. He was a typical hard-working farmer. He and his family raised cattle, hogs, sheep and chickens along with assorted cats, dogs, ducks, and occasional horse or mule. He grew corn, soybeans, hay and oats. He taught his kids the value of hard work.

When he retired from farming in the late 1980s, he drove delivery trucks and buses for a commuter bus to Des Moines, NAPA Auto Parts and Quality Homes. Delivering homes, he had interesting stories to tell. His final job was a school bus driver for Adair-Casey schools.

He was a lifetime resident of the Anita area and a member of the Anita Masonic Obedience Lodge #380.

After retirement, Charlie became a big kid who collected farm toys. He enjoyed going to the sale barns in Anita and Massena, fishing with the grandkids and watching his grandchildren's activities. He loved being a grandpa. He also became a caretaker to many abandoned dogs! Who knew he was such a softie?

He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Jeanette, Margaret and Genevieve; and two brothers, Conrad and Bill.

Charlie is survived by a daughter, Roberta McAfee (Mark Tilton) of Des Moines, IA; sons, Ralph (Debbie) McAfee of Parish, FL, Steve McAfee of Massena, IA, Alan McAfee of Madison, WI, and Scott McAfee of Adair, IA; grandchildren, Alex McAfee, Christian McAfee, Cole McAfee, Tyler McAfee and his fiancé, Grace Hansen, Paige McAfee and Peter McAfee; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Open visitation will be from 12:00 – 6:00 p.m., Friday, March 27, 2020, at Hockenberry Family Care Funeral Home in Anita. The funeral home is following the CDC guidelines of 10 people or less in the building at a time.

Private family graveside services will be held at Evergreen Cemetery in Anita, Iowa.
