Darlene May Pieken, 89, of Atlantic, Iowa, passed away Saturday, February 17, 2018, at her home in Atlantic.

Darlene was born November 24, 1928, in Atlantic, Iowa, to Oscar William and Edna Edith (Anderson) Peterson. She attended school in Atlantic and graduated from the Atlantic High School in 1946.

She married Leo Herbert Pieken on June 4, 1949, at the Congregational Church in Atlantic. She worked at The Pines for 18 years and was a deli manager for Econo Foods for 15 years. Darlene retired in November of 1999.

Darlene was a resident of Atlantic all her life. She was a member of the United Church of Christ in Atlantic, where she was active in a number of church activities. Darlene also participated in a number of Relay for Life events.

She was known for her popcorn balls and her caramel corn. Darlene enjoyed crocheting and embroidering tea towels, going to garage sales, and trips to the casino. She loved her family and would attend her grandchildren and great-grandchildren’s activities.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Leo.

Darlene is survived by her children, Tom (Jan) Pieken of Crescent, IA, Nancy (Tom) Nolte of Grass Lake, MI, Linda (Fred) Oliver of Oakland, IA, Randall Pieken of Avoca, IA and Roger (Jodi) Pieken of Lake View, IA; eleven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two brothers, Don Peterson of Atlantic, IA and Jerry Peterson of Yucca Valley, CA; a sister, Norma Brix of Atlantic, IA; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation with family will be held Wednesday, February 21, 2018, from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. at Hockenberry Family Care Funeral Home in Atlantic.

Funeral services will be on Thursday, February 22, 2018, at 10:30 a.m. at the United Church of Christ in Atlantic with burial in the Atlantic Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be left to the family’s wishes.
