Dean Dickson

January 19, 1951 — May 12, 2018

Dean Todd Dickson, 67, of Anita, Iowa, passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 12, 2018, in his home.

Dean was born in Waterloo, Iowa, on January 19, 1951, to Dwight and Erma (Gramenz) Dickson. He graduated from West High School in 1969 and attended Waldorf College and the University of Northern Iowa until his parents passed away.

Dean worked at Waterloo Concrete building silos, Waterloo Industries building Craftsman tool boxes, and the John Deere Waterloo Tractor Works where he retired in 1999 with 30 years of service.

Dean married Laura Tucker in June 1972 and had two children, Julie and Andrew. He married Janice Mihm on October 27, 1989. He was a member of Trinity American Lutheran Church in Waterloo where he was confirmed and active in the church. He was president of the Luther League.

Dean played football, basketball and tennis in high school and college, getting third in the state in tennis. He loved baseball, but always said that he couldn’t hit the ball.

He was the youngest member of the Waterloo Symphony Orchestra. He also was in a folk music band and had a beautiful voice.

Dean refereed high school basketball games. Later, he enjoyed golfing, hunting, fishing and competing in many bass tournaments. He was also an accomplished pool shooter as well.

Dean and Jan moved to Anita in December of 2000. They enjoyed many years of fishing the farm ponds, lakes and rivers. They were always going everywhere together. Fishing was his passion. There are few pictures of him without a fish in his hands.

He loved sports, especially the Iowa Hawkeyes and the Chicago Cubs. The 2016 World Series was an absolute dream come true!

Dean tried to be the best father, husband, and best friend he could be. His daughter, son and grandkids were his pride and joy and truly the loves of his life.

Dean will be greatly missed by those who loved him, Jan, his wife of 29 years; his daughter, Julie (David) Anderson and their son, Matthew of Cochranville, PA; his son Andy (Leslie) Dickson and their children, Kamryn, and Brady of DeLeon, TX; his mother-in-law, Ila Mihm of New Hampton, IA; brothers-in-law, Denny Mihm of Mason City, IA, Charlie (Shirley) Mihm of Denver, IA, and John (Deb) Mihm of Lawler, IA; sisters-in-law, Donna Mihm of Vancouver, BC, Lorri (Dave) Brown of Cleveland, WI, Jeanine (Ken) Douglas of New Hampton, IA, Cheri (Gary) Thomas of Manly, IA; many cousins and many more family and friends.

It broke our hearts when Dean’s heart stopped beating, but he is with his parents; brother, Rodney; his best friend, Bob Hanson; and brother-in-law, Matthew Tucker. We just hope that God stocked the fishing ponds in Heaven.

Visitation with family will be from 9:00 - 10:30 a.m., with a memorial service beginning at 10:30 a.m., on Thursday May, 17, 2018 at Hockenberry Family Care Funeral Home in Anita, Ia.
