Derald Mendenhall

Derald Duane Mendenhall was born on his father's birthday, January 2, 1938, the son of Homer B. and Ollivene Leoris (Merk) Mendenhall and passed away on Monday, January 19, 2015, at the Friendship Home in Audubon, Iowa.

He was born at the home of his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Merk on a farm northwest of Audubon. Derald grew up in Audubon and was baptized and confirmed at the First United Methodist Church and graduated from the Audubon High School.

He made his living working construction and doing carpentry work.

After falling in love with Connie Abildtrup, the couple married and started a family. They had three children, Brad, Randy and Gina. As time went by he became a grandpa to four lovely granddaughters.

After retirement, Derald enjoyed playing Bingo and hanging out at the Handy Shop, catching up on the local "news." After having a stroke in 1996, he spent time at On With Life in Ankeny, Iowa. He then became a resident at the Friendship Home in Audubon, Iowa, where he enjoyed watching TV and giving the staff a hard time.

Preceding Derald in death was his father, Homer Mendenhall.

Derald is survived by his mother, Ollivene Mendenhall of Audubon, IA; his children, Brad Mendenhall, Randy (Dorene) Mendenhall and Gina Lillie; his grandchildren, Samantha and Ashley Lillie, and Faith and Rachel Mendenhall; his sisters, Marilyn Andreasen of Tabor, IA, and Deloris (Roy) Rustvold of Audubon, IA; his brothers, Gary (Patty) Mendenhall of Carroll, IA and Jeff Mendenhall of Branson, MO; nieces, nephews; his Friendship Home "family" and other relatives and friends.

A visitation will be held on Sunday, January 25, 2015, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at Hockenberry-England Funeral Home in Audubon.

Lunch will be served at 5:00 pm., following the visitation, at the home of Deloris and Roy Rustvold, 315 Pacific Street, Audubon, Iowa.

Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery in Audubon, Iowa, at a later date.
