Donald Pollock

Donald D. Pollock, 88, of Anita, Iowa, passed away Wednesday, January 23, 2019, at the Cass County Memorial Hospital in Atlantic, Iowa.

He was born November 30, 1930, the son of Rowley and Ida (Dorale) Pollock, at his grandparents’ home in Anita, Iowa. Don attended schools in Anita and graduated from Anita High School in 1949. Don was united in marriage to Betty Larsen on April 27, 1953, in Council Bluffs, Iowa.

Don lived his whole life in Anita except for the time he served in the United States Marine Corp and when he attended and graduated from the Commercial Extension College in Omaha, Nebraska. During his time in the military he served overseas during the Korean Conflict and received several medals including the Purple Heart Medal. After returning home from his military service, he worked for Carl Moore at the DX gas station in Anita. Don then was employed at the Anita State Bank for 26 years before purchasing the Wiota Elevator. He owned and operated the elevator for over 25 years before retiring at age 85 in 2016.

He was active in his community and was involved in the construction of the Crestwood Hills Golf Course in Anita, and served as the first president there. Don also served on the park boards, several church boards and the Cass County Abstract Board. He was also a member of the Anita Volunteer Fire Department.

Don was a great story teller and will always be remembered for his bag trick. He loved to play golf, go fishing, traveling, camping, and taking the kids on summer vacations when they were younger. Above all, Don never met a stranger.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Rowley Sr. and Ida Pollock; his son-in-law, Michael Bryant; his brothers, Rowley Jr. (Shirley) Pollock and William (Marguerite) Pollock; and his brothers and sisters-in-law, Irene (Harold) Schwenneker, Thelma (John) Jergens, Ethel (Robert) Waters, Norman Larsen, John Williams, Kenneth Larsen, Harold Larsen, and Harlan McCaw.

Don is survived by his wife Betty Pollock; his children, David (Julie) Pollock, Diane Bryant and Daniel Pollock; his grandchildren, Jamie (Tony) Mocarski, Katie Pollock and Michael Bryant; his great- grandchildren Caylee Roegge, Jack and Clare Mocarski; his sisters-in-law, Phyllis Williams, Marna McCaw, LaVonne Larsen and Leola Larsen; special niece and nephew, John and Tracey Knutsen; many other nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Visitation with family will be from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. Sunday, January 27, 2019, at Hockenberry Funeral Home in Anita, Iowa.

A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, January 28, 2019, at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Anita, Iowa.

Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Anita, Iowa.
