DONALD (DEAN) WAHLERT

Donald (Dean) Wahlert, 77, of Adair, Iowa, passed away Friday, July 14, 2006, at the Creighton University Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska.
Donald Dean Wahlert was born March 26, 1929, in rural Guthrie County, Iowa, the son of Christian Edward and Bertha Katherine (Hammann) Wahlert.
He was baptized in St. John's Lutheran Church, northwest of Adair, and confirmed in Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Anita.
Dean attended country schools and in 1946 graduated from the Adair High School.
After graduation, he worked for the Sinner Ford Motor Co. in Greenfield, Iowa. He then served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and was stationed in Germany during the Army occupation.
Upon returning to Adair, he began farming the home place and continued until the time of his death. While farming, Dean also worked reading meters for the R.E.C., as well as working for the ASCS, measuring cropland for a number of years in Iowa and Mississippi.
Dean was a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Anita, where he had served on the Board of Stewards. He was also a life member of the Farm Bureau.
He enjoyed crafting, woodworking and going to flea markets. He was an avid mandolin picker and was known to lend a helping hand whenever family or friends needed him.
Dean is survived his sister, Ruby Wortman of Adair, Iowa, his brother and sister-in-law, Harold and Mary Wahlert of Anita, Iowa, and his sister and brother-in-law, Lois and Norman Vandivort of Raymondville, Missouri. Also surviving are a number of nephews and nieces.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Christian and Bertha Wahlert, and a sister, Opal Wheatley.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, July 18, 2006, at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Anita, with the Reverend Ted Weishaupt officiating.
Visitation is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m., Monday, with the family present from 7:00 until 8:00 p.m. at the Hockenberry-Mullen Funeral Home in Anita.
Committal services and interment will be in the Evergreen Cemetery, Anita, Iowa, followed by a fellowship and luncheon at the Anita American Legion Hall.
The family is suggesting that memorials go to Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Anita in Dean's memory.
Hockenberry-Mullen Funeral Home in Anita is in charge of the arrangements.
