Dorothy Evelyn Greenlee, age 96, of Atlantic formerly of Anita, passed away on Thursday, December 7, 2023, at Heritage House in Atlantic, IA.
Dorothy E. Richmond Greenlee was born March 13, 1927, to Ollie and Eva (Miller) Richmond. Dorothy grew up in Stuart, living her younger years with her mother, two brothers, and her grandmother. Her father had passed away prior to Dorothy being born.
Dorothy married Robert (Bob) Greenlee on August 29, 1942. To this union, a daughter was born, the joy of their lives, Connie Lee Greenlee.
Dorothy was a long-time member of the Anita Methodist Church, serving as secretary to the UMW and a Trustee to the Church. She was a member of the Federated Club Pythian Sister’s. She was a member of the Crestwood Golf Club, which she and Bob loved golfing. She was also a 25-year-old member of the Board of Social Services.
Dorothy worked as a site manager for Southwest 8 Senior Services for 17 years. Dorothy received her GED from the encouragement of Bob. She then went to college and received her 90-hour certificate in Nutrition and Food management and was promoted to Field Representative by Southwest 8 Senior Services, a job that she loved. She was very proud of the Staff Award given to her by former Governor Terry Branstad. Also, the Community Betterment Award was given to her and the Anita Meal Site, for their work in cleaning up Keystone Park.
Dorothy was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother. She enjoyed her family so much, she also liked to cook for them. She always wanted to have a holiday so there could be a party. Dorothy loved her home.
After Bob and Dorothy retired, they loved traveling and taking camping trips with their great-grandchildren. They wintered in Arizona for a few years and then went to Brownsville, Texas until they felt that they were not safe in pulling their trailer down south and stayed in Iowa.
Dorothy was a very strong woman; she nursed Bob when he got sick until he passed. She was diagnosed with cancer in 2005 and went through a rough course of chemotherapy. She had been cancer-free since that time.
Dorothy is preceded in death by her beloved husband Bob, her parents, her daughter Connie, her great-great-granddaughter Abby, and her two brothers.
Dorothy is survived by her grandchildren Debra (Francis) Hollinrake of Adair, Brad (Terri) Barber of Anita, and Barbara Jo (Mark) Norton of Webster City; Great grandchildren Mathew (Keri) Hollinrake of Estherville, Jonathan (Dianna) Hollinrake of Sioux City, Elizabeth Lillard of Anita, Zach Barber of Anita, Amanda (Cory) Buck of Audubon, TJ (Jess) Barber of Wiota, Wayne (Kara) Victor of Griswold, Jessica (John) Casey of Falls City, Nebraska, Heath Victor of Bedford. She has been blessed with 17 great-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Dorothy enjoyed life and was so grateful she survived her cancer. Dorothy would like to say that she is ready to meet her maker, but not sure that her maker is prepared for the great ordeal of meeting her.
