Dorothy Henriksen

Dorothy Marie Henriksen, 92, of Atlantic, Iowa, passed away Monday January 15, 2018, at the Heritage House in Atlantic, Iowa.

Dorothy was born December 14, 1925, the daughter of Otto and Mabel (Sorensen) Schwartz, at her grandparents’ home near Walnut, Iowa. She attended rural elementary schools when her parents farmed in Cass County (Washington Township, then Brighton Township), then her family moved to farm her grandparents’ farm in Lincoln Township in Pottawattamie County. Dorothy boarded in Atlantic for high school, and graduated in 1943. She took the normal teacher training in high school and began teaching when she was 17 on a “War Emergency Certificate”. She taught for 7 years in rural schools, then began working at Olsen’s Grocery, then at the Whitney Bank.

On September 13, 1953, she was united in marriage to Norman Henriksen at the Presbyterian Church in Atlantic. Three children were born to the couple. Dorothy and Norman farmed north of Audubon on the Christensen Ranch until 1965 when they bought a farm and moved to Pymosa Township north of Atlantic. In 1986 they retired from farming and moved from the farm to Atlantic in 1990.

Dorothy was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Atlantic, and was very active in many capacities, including Church Women United. She was an enthusiast of genealogy and was a member of the Cass County Genealogy Society. She was Co-Editor of the Cass County History book that was published in 1980, and active in organizing the Jensen/Haahr family history book in 2006. She was active with Friends of the Danish Museum in Elk Horn, Iowa. She loved to travel, and enjoyed the family’s annual summer vacations. She enjoyed her Pinochle card clubs. Dorothy always had a large garden on the farm and she was a wonderful cook. Above all her most cherished pastime was spending time with her children and grandchildren, who will always remember her as kind and loving.

Dorothy is survived by her daughter, Mary Henriksen and husband, Alan Hanson of Omaha, NE; son, Jon Henriksen of Minneapolis, MN; daughter, Marcia Buboltz and husband, Dave Buboltz of rural Lewis, IA; her grandchildren, Maren (Jay) Collins of Omaha, NE, Kirstine (Bill) Fitzgerald of Englewood, CO, Jeremy Hanson of Annapolis, MD, Michelle Buboltz of West Des Moines, IA, and Aaron Buboltz of Clinton, IA; three great-grandchildren, Violet Collins, Rowan and Ariana Fitzgerald; many nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends.

Preceding Dorothy in death were her husband, Norman; her parents, Otto and Mabel Schwartz; brother, Robert (Patricia) Schwartz; parents-in-law, Clarence and Martha Henriksen; Henriksen in-laws, Dale and Ruth Henriksen, Ardyth and Marvin Laursen, Phyllis and Wayne Olsen, Marilyn and Lisle Hash; nephew’s wife, Laura Olsen; and several cousins.

Visitation will be from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, January 24, 2018, at Hockenberry Family Care Funeral Home in Atlantic, IA.

Funeral services will be at 11:30 a.m., Thursday, January 25, 2018, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Atlantic, Iowa. Burial will be in the Atlantic Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Atlantic or the Cass County Genealogical Society.
