Elaine Gettler

Elaine Katherine Gettler, 97, of Adair, IA, passed away Friday, April 23, 2021, at the Stuart Community Care Center in Stuart, IA.

Elaine was born June 19, 1923, in Guthire County, IA, to Charlie and Elizabeth (Faga) Wedemeyer. She graduated from Adair High School. After high school she furthered her education at AIB College of Business in Des Moines. While attending college, Elaine was a nanny for a family in Des Moines.

On January 9, 1944, she married Walt Gettler at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Adair. To this union one daughter and seven sons were born. They farmed in Guthrie and Audubon counties before moving to the Casey, Iowa, area in 1951. They continued to farm until moving to Adair in 1969. Elaine was a bookkeeper for Gettler Construction, where they built numerous homes in the Adair area.

To fill time, Elaine was a waitress at numerous restaurants in Adair for many years. She enjoyed helping on the farm, teaching Sunday school and being a part of the ladies aid at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Casey. She also enjoyed gardening, canning, and of course, spending time with family.

Preceded in death are her parents, Charlie and Elizabeth Wedemeyer; former husband, Walt Gettler; two sons, Dennis and Duane Gettler; grandchild, Debra Grant; a great-grandchild, Cade Gettler; and a brother, Marvin Wedemeyer.

Elaine is survived by her children; Karen (Jim) Grant, Donald (Derinda) Gettler, Delmar (Marie) Gettler, Dean (Sharon) Gettler, Daryl (Sherry) Gettler, David (Kristen) Gettler; daughters-in-law, Sheryl Nichols and Mary Gettler; 27 grandchildren; 55 great-grandchildren; and 5 great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 9:30 – 11:00 a.m. with a funeral service starting at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, April 27, 2021, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Casey, IA, with Rev. Jeffrey Keuning officiating.

Burial will take place at Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery in Adair, IA, with a reception to follow at the Schafer Barn just north of Adair.

Memorials may be directed to the family and will be designated later in memory of Elaine.
