Elvie Katherine Scott

March 12, 1928 — August 5, 2020

Elvie Katherine Scott was born to Holger and Sophia (Bosche) Larsen on March 12, 1928 at her parents’ home in rural Shelby County, Iowa, and passed away at the Friendship Home in Audubon, Iowa on August 5, 2020 at the age of 92 years, 4 months, and 23 days.

Elvie was baptized at the Presbyterian Manse in Manilla, Iowa. She attended various country schools and graduated from Gray High School with the Class of 1945. Following high school, she worked at Tony’s Restaurant in Carroll, Iowa.

On November 21, 1948, Elvie was united in marriage to Harold Scott at the Gray Methodist Church in Gray, Iowa, and together they raised Dianna, born in 1950. Harold and Elvie lived on the Scott family farm all their married life, raising crops, hogs, chickens, and sheep.

Elvie helped out at Frank and Vi’s Café in Gray for a short period, and for several harvest seasons, she worked at Garst Seed Company in Coon Rapids, Iowa, sorting corn. She was also employed at DeBoth’s Greenhouse in Audubon for several springs. Harold passed away in March of 1992, and Elvie remained on the farm until the fall of 2006, when she moved into Gray. Because of failing health, she moved to the Friendship Home in Audubon on Christmas Eve, 2010.

Harold and Elvie made many fishing trips to Minnesota through the years. When granddaughter Malinda turned two years old, they included her on their trips, instilling in her a deep love of fishing and boating. The tradition continues as Malinda now takes her family fishing every summer to the same Minnesota lakes. During the 60s and 70s, Harold and Elvie enjoyed conversing with old and new friends on their CB radios, taking on the CB handles of “Barney” and “Sapphire.”

Elvie was an avid scrapbooker, filling many scrapbooks with various things, including but not limited to newspaper clippings of anyone she knew, invitations to any event, special bulletins, and even party napkins. She was an active member of the Gray United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School, enjoyed Bible study groups, and was a member of the United Methodist Women (UMW). In her time, she served numerous chicken suppers and roast beef dinners. She attended church faithfully, even after moving to the Friendship Home, thanks to Bev Testroet and her “church bus.” Elvie and some neighbor women started the ODO Club (Our Day Off), which provided them with monthly get togethers for many years. Elvie was also an active member of the Gray Community Betterment Corporation (GCBC), serving on the board of directors for more than 25 years.

Elvie made many family Sunday dinners – fried chicken was her specialty. She so very much enjoyed spending time with family, both immediate and extended. She often traveled to visit family throughout her years and loved “catching up.” She had a tremendous gift of gab and could talk for hours, whether in person or over the phone. She cherished her time with friends and was often a chauffer for many of them. Her family and friends meant the world to her. Another favorite activity was gardening and working with her flowers. Her yard was always full of flower beds, and she was never without a table of African violets by her window.

Preceding her in death were her husband, Harold Scott; her brother Vernon and wife Dorothy Larsen; her parents; and other relatives and special friends.

Left to carry on her legacy are her daughter, Dianna and husband Larry Petersen of Gray, Iowa; her granddaughter, Malinda and husband Justin Petersen and her great-grandaughter Bailey Katherine, all of Lincoln, Nebraska; her niece Gloria and husband Jud Requist of Stanton, Iowa; as well as other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be Saturday, August, 8, 2020, at 11:00 A.M. at the Gray United Methodist Church in Gray, Iowa with Pastor Vickie Steffes officiating. The family will greet friends Saturday morning beginning at 9:30 A.M. until the time of the service at the Gray United Methodist Church in Gray. Interment will be in the Cameron Township Cemetery, east of Gray, Iowa. Casket bearers will be Larry Petersen, Justin Petersen, Jud Requist, Bill Eich, Virgil Schmidt, and Steve Fosness.

The family prefers that anyone attending the visitation or the funeral please wear a mask.
