Freda Cecilia Lund Alff, of Casey, Iowa, passed away Sunday, July 2, 2006 at the Guthrie County Hospital in Guthrie Center, Iowa, at the age of 94 years, 11 months and two days.
Freda was born August 1, 1911, in Douglas Township, Audubon County, Iowa, the daughter of Jens J. and Martha N. (Madsen) Andersen.
She was baptized at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Audubon, Iowa. In 1922, Freda and her family moved to Leon, Iowa. They moved back to Audubon in 1928 and she was confirmed at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church and graduated from the Audubon High School. During her high school years, Freda worked at numerous businesses in Audubon and after graduation, she was a telephone operator and later taught country school.
On August 22, 1931, Freda married Harold Lund in Rock Port, Missouri. They farmed in Audubon, Guthrie and Cass counties and Freda returned to teaching country school after the birth of her three daughters. In 1957, they went into the restaurant business in Kimballton, Iowa and later in Irwin and Newell, Iowa.
Freda loved to bake and cook and she used this love and talent in the restaurant and in her home. Everyone loved her homemade cinnamon rolls. She also enjoyed sewing and made many clothes for her daughters.
Freda's husband Harold, passed away February 6, 1972 and on January 6, 1979, she married Lawrence Alff at St. John's Lutheran Church in Casey, Iowa. They lived in Casey and enjoyed their years together. After Lawrence's death on April 12, 1990, Freda lived in the house until moving to an apartment in 1994. She enjoyed playing cards with her friends and in her later years, became a good bridge player. She was also a longtime member and Past President of the 60+ Club in Casey.
Freda was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Casey and was an active member of the LWML until becoming an honorary member.
She is survived by her three daughters and sons-in-law, Janet and Verdell Nelson of Casey, Iowa, Mary and John Toft of White Haven, Pennsylvania, Beverly and Ronald Juelsgaard of Exira, Iowa; a step-son, Wendell and his wife, Darlene Alff of Sacramento, California; two step-daughters, Shirley and her husband, Bill Kenny of Omaha, Nebraska, and Rosalie and her husband, Jim Downing of Shenandoah, Iowa; her sister, Lorraine Simpson of Exira, Iowa; eight grandchildren, Terry and his wife, Kathy Nelson of Casey, Iowa, Lisa and her husband, Allen Lehman of Casey, Iowa, Jane and her husband, John Livecchi of Sparta, New Jersey, Candace and her husband, Bryan Allen of Mercerville, New Jersey, Elizabeth Toft of Norwich Connecticut, Martha and her husband, Mark Hanik of Norman, Oklahoma, Robin and her husband, Jack Carder of Grimes, Iowa, Brian and his wife, Traci Juelsgaard of Brayton, Iowa; 16 great-grandchildren, Ashley and Whitney Nelson of Casey, Iowa, Tanner and Tori Lehman of Casey, Iowa, Rebecca and Jared Allen of Mercerville, New Jersey, Jack and Tommy Livecchi of Sparta, New Jersey, Alison and Forest Smith of Gales Ferry Connecticut, Noah and Natalie Hanik of Norman, Oklahoma, Danielle Dee of Grimes, Iowa, Cody, Kylie and Colin Juelsgaard of Brayton, Iowa. Also surviving are 12 step, grandchildren; two step, great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Freda was preceded in death by her parents, Jens and Martha Andersen; her husband, Harold Lund; an infant daughter; her grandson, Randall Juelsgaard; her second husband, Lawrence Alff; a sister, Myrtle Hansen; brother, Edwin Andersen, during WWII; brother, Reverend Leo Andersen; and her sister, Alice Havick.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, July 6, 2006 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Casey, Iowa with the Reverend Luke Zimmerman officiating.
Visitation will begin at 1:00 p.m., Wednesday and the family will be present from 7:00 until 8:30 p.m., Wednesday evening at the Hockenberry-Mullen Funeral Home in Casey.
Committal services and interment will be in the Exira Cemetery, Exira, Iowa
Memorials may be given to St. John's Lutheran Church, Casey, Iowa.
Hockenberry-Mullen Funeral Home, Casey, Iowa, is in charge of the arrangements.
