Freda Rosalie Hemmingsen

November 23, 1921 — April 16, 2012

Freda Rosalie Hemmingsen, the daughter of Oluf and Lucie Berg Winther, was born November 23, 1921, at her parents’ home in Guthrie County near Coon Rapids, Iowa and died April 16, 2012, at the Friendship Home in Audubon, Iowa at the age of 90 years, 4 months, and 23 days. Freda was baptized and confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Audubon, Iowa. She attended rural school “Douglas #3” then graduated from the Audubon High School with the Class of 1939. Freda was employed as a telephone operator for North Western Bell. On May 23, 1943, she was united in marriage to Earl Reuben Hemmingsen at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Audubon. Two sons Paul and Richard were born to this union. Freda worked for the telephone company until Paul was born and then was a homemaker raising the two boys. Later she did seasonal work for the Audubon canning factory and the Lansman seed corn company. They retired from farming in 1966 and moved into Audubon. Freda then was a baby sitter for her grandchildren and other families for many years. Freda and Earl enjoyed their home then moved to the Friendship Home in Audubon in January of 2004. Earl died February 26, 2006. Freda was a member of Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church and was a member of the Ladies Circle. She was a long time member of the “ODO” Neighborhood Club. She was a member of the Rebekkah Lodge. She also would bake cakes for The Odd Fellows Lodge for Saturday nights when Earl called the bingo games. Preceding her in death was her husband Earl R. Hemmingsen; her parents; her mother-in-law and father-in-law Carl and Anna Helen Christine Hemmingsen; her brother and sisters: Emma Winther; Ollivene and husband Ben Schmidt; Orville and wife Sylvia Winther; Louella and husband Russell Grout; Wilma and husband Woodrow Hansen; her brothers-in-law and sister-in-law: Glen Hemmingsen; Lester Hemmingsen; and Violet Hemmingsen. Survivors include her sons: Paul and wife Joyce Hemmingsen; Richard and wife Janice Hemmingsen all of Audubon, Iowa; her grandchildren: Scott and wife Alice Hemmingsen; Bradley and wife Christena Hemmingsen; Christine and husband Tony Konkler all of Audubon; Todd and wife Angella Hemmingsen of Ankeny, Iowa; Amy and husband Don Smith of Griswold, Iowa; Michael and wife Leah Hemmingsen of Grimes, Iowa; her great grandchildren: Emily Hemmingsen, Zachary Hemmingsen, Matthew Hemmingsen, Shawn Hemmingsen all of Audubon; Emma Konkler, Katie Konkler, Ezekiel Konkler all of Audubon; Tanner Hemmingsen, Garrett Hemmingsen both of Ankeny; Adam Karns of Omaha, Nebraska; Riley Smith, Claire Smith both of Griswold; Kellen Hemmingsen, and Cole Hemmingsen both of Grimes; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Cemetery:
Interment will be in the Maple Grove Cemetery in Audubon.

Visitation:
The family will meet friends Wednesday evening at 6:30 P.M. at the Kessler Funeral Home in Audubon.

Service:
Funeral services will be conducted by Pastor Doug Opp on Thursday, April 19, 2012 at 10:30 A.M. at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Audubon.
