Harold Edward Wahlert, Sr. 92, of Atlantic, Iowa, passed away early Tuesday morning January 15, 2019, at Cass County Memorial Hospital.
He was born September 19, 1926, to Christian and Bertha (Hammann) Wahlert in Guthrie County, Iowa. He grew up in Adair County where he attended country school. Harold graduated from Adair High School in 1942. In September of 1945 he was inducted into the United States Army and was honorably discharged in December of 1946.
Harold married Mary LaRue Shannon on July 24, 1955. They lived and farmed southeast of Anita for several years. Harold and Mary were members of Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Anita.
During this time Harold and Mary tended a huge garden. Harold spent a lot of time helping with the Wahlert family farm. His hobbies were fishing, working on cars, and playing guitar with his brother Dean.
Harold was employed at Atlantic Lumber yard, then later as a custodian for the Atlantic school system.
Early in 1983 they bought and moved to an acreage on the north edge of Anita on Maple Street where they raised a few cattle, turkeys and llamas. After retirement they moved to Atlantic in 2010 to be closer to Mary’s weekly dialysis treatments.
Harold is survived by his daughter, Virginia (Mike) Blackford and their children, Daryk, Shasta and Rayce (Kaitlyn); son, Harold E. Wahlert Jr. and his children, Amanda, Harold Jr. III and Liza; his sisters, Ruby Wortman and Lois Jean Vandivort; his brothers-in-law, Jack (Donna) Shannon, Lyle (Marcia) Shannon, Clark “Butch” Shannon, and Rellen “Skip” (Phyllis) Shannon; sisters-in-law, Maurine (Dwight) Gard, Ada (Robert) Scarff, Sharon Sandhorst, and Hannah Shannon; along with a great many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary; his parents, Christian and Bertha Wahlert; his parents-in-law, Maurice and Mary Shannon; brother, Dean Wahlert; sister, Opal Wheatley; brothers-in-law, Wayne Shannon, Gail Shannon and Roger Sandhorst.
There will be a memorial service at 1:30 p.m., Saturday, January 26, 2019, at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Anita, Iowa.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorials to Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Anita.
