Obituary

Harriet Campbell, born December 21, 1929, at home West of Brayton, Iowa, left this earthly life and passed away at the age of 96, on Friday, September 11, 2026, at the Audubon County Memorial Hospital in Audubon, IA.

Harriet was the middle child of Peter and Lydia Emelie (Faaborg) Rasmussen. She was baptized April 13, 1930, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Atlantic, Iowa, and confirmed April 2, 1944, at Oak Hill Lutheran Church, West of Brayton, Iowa. She attended Brayton rural schools and graduated from the Exira High School Class of 1948. After graduation and attending college in Omaha, Harriet worked in secretarial jobs at Atlantic and Audubon.

Harriet met her husband of 58 years at a dance in Brayton, Iowa. Robert Campbell became her husband, love, and best friend on May 1, 1949, at the Methodist Church Parsonage in Audubon, Iowa. Farming the 240-acre homestead was a passion for them. Harriet had a large garden and spent hours canning produce. She had excellent baking skills and provided many meals for family and farm workers during their life on the farm. She was a faithful servant of God and instilled her faith into her three children, who all have a strong faith. Her children, Thomas, Barbara, and Paul, value the lessons of character, responsibility, and honesty, which Harriet felt to be important. She always encouraged her children. Monthly gatherings with the neighborhood card club were always looked forward to by Harriet and Robert. In 1975, Harriet took a part-time job working at the Friendship Home in Audubon, Iowa, as a secretarial receptionist and continued working there for 20 years.

Moving from the farm in 1995 to Audubon allowed Robert and Harriet to remain independent. They had the assurance that the farm would be taken care of by the fourth generation, as the youngest son, Paul, and his family would continue to live there. Harriet was an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Audubon, where she participated in church circles and received the Special Mission Recognition Pin for her service. She enjoyed the Audubon Public Library and reading countless books and newspapers, exercising at the ACMH Fitness Center, Congregate Meals, and playing Bingo there, embroidery, counted cross-stitch, watching sports, and playing Skip-Bo with her special friends. Trips made to Elk Horn to visit her sisters, Irene and Shirley, always held cherished memories as well. Harriet and her sisters even volunteered together for several years at the Danish Immigrant Museum.

Harriet will be missed by her family and friends. Her eternal journey has begun. We celebrate her life and rejoice in her sainthood.

Preceding Harriet in death were her husband, Robert; her parents; her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Fred and Mabel Campbell; her sister and husband, Irene and Wendell Larsen; her sister, Shirley Nelson; granddaughter-in-law, Ann Lohry Smith; and many beloved sisters and brothers-in-law, nephews, and a niece.
