Jack Dewulf

A funeral mass for Jack A. DeWulf will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, January 27, 2018, at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church, in Atlantic, Iowa. Visitation with family will be from 9:00 – 10:00 a.m. prior to mass at the church. Father Chinna will be the mass celebrant. Interment in Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Cemetery will immediately follow the service, and then lunch will be served at the Catholic Parish Center.

The son of August and Mary DeWulf, Jack was born in Cedar Rapids, Nebraska, in 1921, one of eight children. He graduated from Cedar Rapids High School in 1939, followed by four years of military service spent in the China, Burma, and India Theater. He graduated from the University of Nebraska in 1950, where he was a member of the Farmhouse Fraternity, Innocent Honorary Society, and Alpha Beta Scholastic Honorary.

Following graduation from college, Jack worked as a Mortgage-Loan Appraiser for Prudential Insurance Company and resided in Kearney, Nebraska. In 1962, he and his family moved to Atlantic, Iowa, where he was employed by Walnut Grove Products. While with Walnut Grove, he served in several capacities, including Director of Human Resources.

His marriage to Mary Ellen Schroeder took place in 1951. While residing in Kearney, a daughter, Mary Lee, and a son, John, were born. While living in Atlantic, Jack was President of Rotary, he served on the Chamber Board, the Atlantic Industrial Foundation Board, and the New High School Steering Committee. He also served on the SS Peter and Paul Church Council, the Family Crisis Financial Board, and the Junior Achievement Board. Jack was a member of the Elk’s Club, delivered Meals on Wheels for several years, and was a Master Gardener, hosting tours of his back yard annually. Jack dried his flowers and made about 35 bouquets each fall giving them to friends.

Jack’s wife, Mary Ellen, preceded him in death in 1988. He is survived by his daughter, Mary Lee Swendsen and husband, Dave, and their two children Jim, (wife Anne, and sons Charlie and Sam) and Dan from Edina, MN. Jack’s son, John, and wife, Kris, and their children, Alex, Joe, Sofie, and Tess from Phoenix, AZ. He is also survived by sisters, Monica DeWulf and Joan Kayton.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Bill, and sisters, Marie Kokrda, Kate Quigley, Rita Echternacht, and Jean Meyer.

Jack loved ice cream. Due to the kindness shown to Jack during his final days, the family would like to buy an ice cream maker for the Harmony Cove area of Heritage House. Memorials may be made to the “Jack DeWulf HCF” (Health Center Fund). The Heritage House address is 1200 Brookridge Circle, Atlantic, IA 50022.
