Janet L. Nelson, 86, of Casey, Iowa, passed away Tuesday, September 15, 2020, at Guthrie County Hospital, in Guthrie Center, IA.
Janet was born May 9, 1934, in Audubon County, IA. She was the daughter of Harold and Freda (Anderson) Lund. She started out attending school in Exira, then Casey, then graduated from Adair High School in 1953. After high school, she joined the Air Force and became a Meteorologist for two years. On May 1, 1955, at the Exira Lutheran Church, she was united in marriage to Verdell Dean Nelson. Together they raised two children, Terry and Lisa. Janet and Verdell moved to Casey in 1960. Janet was the Postmaster for Casey for over 20 years, and was also a part time bookkeeper for the family’s P&N Hardware Store. She was a member of the Casey American Legion and St. John’s Lutheran Church in Casey.
Janet loved playing card games with friends and family. She was a master at constructing puzzles. She loved traveling with family, writing in her journal, and making her famous “Finger Bars”.
She is survived by her husband, Verdell Nelson of Casey; son, Terry (Cathy) Nelson of Casey; daughter, Lisa (Bryan) Hansen of Guthrie Center, IA; four grandchildren, Ashley, Whitney, Tanner (Shaina), and Tori; one great-grandchild, Axley; two sisters, Mary (John) Toft and Beverly (Ronnie) Juelsgaard; and many nieces and nephews.
Janet was preceded in death by her parents, Harold and Freda; and sister-in-law, Mary Ann Plagman
Open visitation will be held prior to the funeral from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. with the funeral starting at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, September 21, 2020, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Casey, IA.
Burial will be in Dalmanutha Cemetery, north of Casey.
Per Janet’s wishes, memorials may be directed to the family, and will be designated at a later date
Hockenberry Funeral Home in Adair, Iowa, is entrusted with the arrangements.
