Janet "Jan" Kay Sorensen

December 7, 1949 — June 17, 2025

Exira

Janet “Jan” Kay Sorensen, the daughter of Marvan and Phyllis “Wadell” Nissen, was born at St. Anthony’s Regional Hospital, Carroll, Iowa. She entered into heaven on June 17, 2025, at Unity Point Methodist Hospital, Des Moines, Iowa.

She grew up milking cows and working hard on her family farm. Jan was a proud cheerleader for the Exira Vikings, graduating with the class of 1968. She was confirmed and baptized at the Exira Lutheran Church. She took her confirmation seriously, and she made sure her children did too. Jan attended Beauty School in Des Moines, with her friend, Linda Kimball, after graduation. Jan loved having her makeup and hair perfect. She added being a Mary Kay consultant to her passion.

Jan married her childhood friend and the love of her life, Bub, on September 12, 1970, at the Exira Lutheran Church. Jan and Bub had a real life love story and she loved sharing it. Jan could name a Golden Oldie song playing, the year, where she was, what she was doing and the story usually included Bub.

Jan worked for Dorine Koob on Main Street, doing hair, for years. She was proud when she was able to buy the Beauty Shop and call it her own. Jan’s Main Street Salon. She retired 20 years ago, due to her health. Jan was also proud to start her family, in her Grandpa and Grandma Waddell’s house and then in Grandpa and Grandma Soren’s house. Jan loved decorating and making their homes “theirs.” Bub and Jan welcomed three daughters and one son to their union. Brandy, Nichole, Angela and Dustin. She loved having her kids, and their friends, gather at the house, for before and after school activities. Entertaining and feeding many kids that came threw the house. Jan took pride in being home, while her children were being raised, and making sure that Bub had hot cooked meals. She attended all of her children’s activities. Jan held positions on the Audubon Hospital Board, Exira Lutheran Church Council, Exira Legion Auxiliary and Exira School Board. Jan loved her school, being vocal, supporting keeping her school local. She enjoyed shopping, getting her nails done, her flowers, baking, cooking, sitting at her kitchen table, while visiting and drinking coffee. Her greatest joy in life was spending time with her husband, children and grandchildren

Preceding her in death were her parents, infant brother, Bradley, Father and Mother-In-Law, Marvin and Mardell Sorensen. Great-Grandson, Case Wilson.

She is survived by her loving husband, Bub and their children: Brandy (Randy) Fiebelkorn, Nichole (Bryan) Towlerton, Angela (Matt) Immel, and Dustin (Adriana) Sorensen. Grandchil-dren: Jacob (Sam) Fiebelkorn, Brooke (Tyler) Wilson, Jessica Ramirez, Blake (Sara) Towlerton, Bryce (Katelynne) Towlerton, Amber (Jon) Oiler, Kane Sorensen, and Elena Sorensen.
