Jay Clifton Heiny, 78, of Walnut, Iowa, passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 31, 2025, at Cass Health in Atlantic, Iowa.
Jay was born on October 22, 1946, in San Diego, California—he was the eldest of two sons. In 1968, he met and married the love of his life, Donna Harris of Walnut, Iowa, beginning a lifelong partnership marked by love, family, and shared adventure. Together, they raised three children—Amber, Richard (Rick), and John—and built a home filled with warmth, laughter, and strong values.
Jay proudly served his country and community, retiring after 20 years from both the United States Postal Service and the Army National Guard. He approached his work with dedication and integrity, and his service left a lasting impact on those around him.
An avid outdoorsman, Jay found joy in hunting, fishing, and searching for artifacts—always drawn to nature and the stories it held. He had a deep appreciation for craftsmanship and was especially proud of his Triumph motorcycle collection, which reflected his eye for detail and love for the open road.
A passionate sports fan, Jay loved watching the San Diego Chargers, San Diego Padres, and Nebraska Cornhuskers, but nothing brought him more joy than cheering on his grandchildren at their baseball and softball games. Family was at the heart of everything he did, and he never missed an opportunity to support and celebrate his loved ones.
In retirement, Jay and Donna enjoyed life at their condo in Myrtle Beach, SC, where they welcomed visits from family and friends and enjoyed the coastal life. Jay had a well-known sweet tooth, with a particular fondness for ice cream, and could often be found relaxing with his loyal dogs, Corky and Rocky, by his side.
Jay will be remembered for his strength, kindness, sense of humor, and deep devotion to his family. He leaves behind a legacy of love, service, and countless cherished memories.
He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Donna Heiny of Walnut, Iowa; sons John Heiny of Walnut, Iowa and Rick (Petra) Heiny of Walnut, Iowa; daughter Amber Heiny of Walnut, Iowa; grandchildren: Christopher Guthery, Carson (Seth) Nelson, Joshuah Guthery, Natasha (Steven) Shea, Sierra Heiny, Jay C.
