Joan Reed

Joan D. Whetstone Reed, 85, of Atlantic, Iowa, passed away from complications of Scleroderma and CML on October 9, 2018, at Mercy Hospice in Johnston, IA.

Joan was born October 29, 1932, in Casey, Iowa, to Stanley and Bessie (Madsen) Whetstone. She grew up on the family farm and attended Thompson #4 country school. She graduated from Casey High School in 1950 and went on to attend Drake University for her teaching certificate.

After leaving Drake, she began teaching elementary school in Wiota, IA. She moved to Atlantic in 1957 and continued teaching at several schools in the Atlantic district until her retirement in 1996.

Joan was married to Duane Reed on August 2, 1959. They were married for 27 years and then divorced.

Joan sang at many weddings and other gatherings throughout the years. She was a member of the Atlantic Methodist Church and helped in Dorcas Circle and worked at the hospital auxiliary. She had also belonged to a neighborhood card club. Joan enjoyed sewing, reading, tending to the farm, and riding in the combine during harvest season.

Joan was preceded in death by her parents, Stan and Bess Whetstone, and her brothers Marvin and Dewey Whetstone.

Joan is survived by her sister-in-law, Pat Whetstone, her nieces Meleah, Kim and Kris Whetstone and her nephews Dan, Bruce and Mark Whetstone

A graveside service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, October 20, 2018, at Dalmanutha Cemetery, Casey, IA. A luncheon will follow at the United Methodist Church in Casey, IA.
