Schmitt
November 26, 1948 – May 31, 2026
Joe Steven Schmitt, 77, of Walnut, Iowa, passed away on Sunday, May 31, 2026, at Cass Health in Atlantic, Iowa.

Joe enjoyed fishing, visiting the casino, and sharing morning coffee and conversation with friends. More than anything, he cherished time spent with his family, especially his grandchildren. He will be remembered for his kindhearted spirit, his willingness to help anyone in need, and his ability to infuse humor and jokes into every conversation.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Jean Schmitt of Walnut; his sons, Jericho (Jenny) Schmitt of Marne, Jason (Leslie) Schmitt of Assumption, Illinois, and Jared (Carrie) Schmitt of Atlantic; stepdaughter, Vickie Knudtson of Walnut; brother, Jesse (Shirley) Schmitt of Marne; sisters, Dorothy Peters of Marne and Della Harrah of Clarion; grandchildren Joseph, Cody, Larissa, Zach, Bethany, Matthew, Haylee, Austin, Kyle, Aaron, Mallory, Macey, Kole, Addison, Keston, Josie, Drew, and Matthew; as well as several great-grandchildren.

A private family graveside burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 4, 2026, at Brighton Cemetery in Marne, Iowa. Following the burial service, family and friends are invited to gather at the Marne Fire Station for a celebration of Joe’s life and a luncheon.
Joe will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew him. His legacy of kindness, laughter, and devotion to family will continue to live on in the hearts of those he touched.
