John Kent Weighton

John Kent Weighton, the son of John “Jack” and Mardell Joy (Nelson) Weighton, was born January 7, 1955, at the Audubon County Memorial Hospital in Audubon, Iowa and died August 22, 2020, at the Audubon County Memorial Hospital at the age of 65 years, 7 months, and 15 days.

John was baptized and confirmed at the First Presbyterian Church in Audubon. He attended Audubon Community Schools, graduating with the High School Class of 1973. After school, he farmed with his father Jack until the early 1980s, when he moved to Hollywood to pursue a career in acting.

On March 18, 1986, he enlisted into the United States Army. During his tour of duty, he served overseas in Bitburg, Germany. He was honorably discharged on March 17, 1990. He made his home in Huntsville, Alabama and was employed for ManTech and Raytheon as a private contractor for the United States military for several years. While employed with Raytheon, he worked on the front line during Operation Desert Storm in Saudi Arabia. Upon his return in 1992, he moved back to Audubon and began a career as an Electronics Technician with the Federal Aviation Administration. On July 7, 2001, he was united in marriage to Peggy Jorgensen at the First Presbyterian Church in Audubon. He continued to work for the FAA until he was forced to retire due to his failing health in October of 2019.

John was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Audubon. He particularly enjoyed researching history, especially that of the military and of aviation. He loved to ride his motorcycle and prided himself on his ever-revolving truck collection.

Preceding him in death were his parents; his step-daughter, Tori and husband Kip Spencer; and his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Erick John and Audrey Jorgensen.

Survivors include his wife, Peggy Weighton of Audubon, Iowa; his step-daughter, Trisha and husband Jeff Nielsen of Audubon; his step-grandchildren, Adrianne Nielsen and fiancé Josh and their son Emmett, all of West Des Moines, Iowa; Jayden Nielsen and Katelyn Nielsen, both of Audubon; Gage Spencer of Colorado Springs, Colorado; and Hannah Spencer and fiancé Adam Finley and their daughter Charlotte, all of Audubon; his step-mother, Sharlette Weighton of Audubon; his brother and sisters: Jacqueline and husband Dan Stetzel of Audubon; Jan and husband John Roberts of Audubon; and James and wife Ruthanne Weighton of Central City, Iowa; his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, John and wife Amy Jorgensen of Audubon, and Troy and wife Julie Jorgensen of Humboldt, Iowa; as well as nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Per John’s wishes, cremation has taken place and a Private Family Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held at a later date. The Kessler Funeral Home in Audubon is assisting John’s family with his arrangements.
