Judith "Judy" Ruth Overton, age 88, of Atlantic, IA, passed away on Friday, August 04, 2023, at Allen Place in Atlantic, IA.
Judith Ruth Doyle was born March 4, 1935, to Tom and Ruth Doyle in Keokuk, Iowa. She grew up and attended school in Keokuk, where her father was an electrician, and her mother managed a children’s department at a large local retailer.
Judy attended Coe College in Cedar Rapids for her freshman year and transferred to the University of Iowa. While still in college, on September 4, 1955, Judy married Jerry Overton, who was also a student at the University of Iowa. In 1957, Judy graduated with High Distinction and a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting.
Later that same year, Judy and Jerry welcomed their first child, Michael, and three years later, they added their daughter, Jennifer.
In 1966, the family moved to Atlantic, Iowa, where Jerry worked at Walnut Grove, and Judy took care of the children and the home, and also later worked at Hanke Jewelry and then managed the books for Camblin Plumbing and Heating.
In addition to taking care of her family, over the years, Judy was active in a number of local organizations, including the Browning Literary Club, PEO, University Women, the Methodist Women’s Church Circle, and Hospital Auxiliary. She was a friend to many, and she enjoyed reading extensively, playing bridge, bowling, and taking extra special care of the family’s dog and several cats.
Judy is survived by her husband, Jerry; son, Michael (Selena); daughter Jennifer (Lynette); grandchildren Stephanie (Mike), Joe, Trilby; and great-grandchild, Thomas.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be designated to the Atlantic Animal Shelter in honor of Judy, they may be mailed to the Schmidt Family Funeral Home P.O. Box 523, Atlantic, IA 50022.
A celebration of life gathering will be held at Schmidt Family Funeral Home in Atlantic from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Friday, September 22, 2023.
Services are handled with the Schmidt Family Funeral Home of Atlantic, IA.
