1930 Mrs. 2022

Mrs. Kathleen Eyberg

September 15, 1930 — September 3, 2022

Kathleen Ruth (Erickson) Eyberg was born on September 15, 1930, to Wilmar Bertrand “Pete” Erickson and Lillie Ingeborg (Anderson) Erickson in Phelps County Nebraska. Kathleen left us on September 3, 2022. She attended school in Funk, NE, Murray and Kent, IA and graduated from Creston, IA in 1947. Kathleen was spotted by Gene as she was on her way to work at the Ben Franklin in Creston. He finagled a blind date through Kathleen’s brother Gene and six months later, Kathleen married William Eugene “Gene” Eyberg in Creston on December 14, 1947. They started their married life in Arispe, Iowa, and then farmed in Afton, Iowa until 1965 and had ten children.

Raising 10 children took up much of Kathleen’s time. They moved to Creston in 1965 where Kathleen worked for the Union County Extension Service as a food aid. After moving to Indianola in 1969, she sold Avon. They lived in Atlantic from 1975 to 2022, where she baked in the High School cafeteria for 18 years. After retiring in 1992, she handed out food samples at the local Hy-Vee. Other side jobs included sewing drapes, walking beans, and refinishing furniture.

Family connections were important to Kathleen and Gene and they made sure to spend regular time with their parents, children, and grandchildren, attending the special school and life events of all of them. She was active in every church she attended, including the Methodist Church in Afton; Salem Lutheran Church in Creston; Redeemer Lutheran Church in Indianola; and St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Atlantic which included Circle, God Squad, Funeral Serving, and Alter Guild.

Kathleen enjoyed family, church, gardening, quilting, sewing, baking, playing cards and games. She loved to talk and spend time with people, making lifelong friends. Her passion was quilting which started after making her first quilt for her son, Jeff. She made hand-quilted quilts for each of her children, and pieced baby quilts for every baby born after her first quilt. Grandchildren graduating from High School received handmade quilts. She easily made over 100 quilts in her lifetime and passed this passion down to her daughters and granddaughters.

Kathleen has left to be with many; Gene, her beloved husband of 73 years; her parents; brother Gene Erickson; her father and mother-in-law Roy and Frances Eyberg; daughter-in-law Susan Eyberg; grandchildren, Todd Vanderpluym, Jordan Eyberg, Jamie and Ann Eyberg, Josh Gower, and Josh Vanderpluym.
Left behind to care for and love each other are her children, Bill (Connie), Kathy (Bob) Bye, Steve, Jim (Kristi), Jeff (Julie), Jane (Mike) Ohnemus, Deb Miller, Patti (Steve) Grant, Jill (Paul) Hans, Judy (Dennis) Kinen; 19 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren (with 1 arriving in December); brother Chuck (Marlene) Erickson, sister-in-law Dorothy Eyberg and many nieces and nephews.

We will miss being able to pick up the phone and talk, ask for advice, and spend time with Mom. Mom was the structure and glue that held us all together and her quilts will remind us of the love she had for all her family.
