Larry Jones

Larry Gordon Jones, 75, of Atlantic, Iowa, passed away January 22, 2018, in Council Bluffs, Iowa.

Larry was the son of Lowell and Leonora Jones. He was born December 12, 1942, in Griswold, Iowa, and eventually moved to the family farm north of Atlantic. Larry graduated from Atlantic High School in 1961.

He attended barber school in Sioux City, Iowa, and began barbering in Fort Dodge, Iowa. While in Fort Dodge, he met and fell in love with Donna Humpal. Larry and Donna were married in June 1963. The couple was blessed with three children, Todd, Angela and Darrell. They lived in Fort Dodge, Otho, Harcourt and eventually returned to Larry’s hometown of Atlantic where they raised their family.

Larry worked for the Atlantic Street Department, Atlantic Police Department and the Cass County Sheriff’s Office. He was a deputy, chief deputy, and eventually Sheriff. He truly enjoyed serving his community.

He retired and settled down on his acreage north of Atlantic. In retirement he loved his life with Donna, his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He loved to mow and tinker around in his shop and enjoyed helping a local farmer in the fields each spring and fall. Larry loved any classic cars but close to his heart was the 1966/1967 Chevrolet Chevelle. He was a loving and supportive husband, father, brother, uncle, grandfather and great-grandfather.

He is survived by his wife, Donna; children, Todd (Sherri) Jones of Sergeant Bluff, Iowa, Angela Jones of Council Bluffs, Iowa, and Darrel (April) Jones of Morganville, Kansas; brothers, Crest (Shirley) Jones of Stuart, Iowa, Max (Vicki) Jones of Des Moines, Iowa; grandchildren, Ashley (Dustin) Goodsell of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Regina (Eric) Shoemaker of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Sean Jones of Indianola, Iowa, Haley Jones and Dalton Jones of Morganville, Kansas; great-grandchildren, Liam and Lily Goodsell, Gabriella and Ethan Shoemaker; and many nieces and nephews.

Larry was preceded in death by his father, Lowell Jones; mother, Leonora Jones; and brother, Byron Jones.

Larry will be truly missed. There will be no services. The family has elected to have a private memorial service at a later date.
