Larry Richter

Larry Richter, 80, died peacefully on Monday, February 8, 2016, at Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska.

Larry Francis Richter was born in Adair, Iowa, on January 13, 1936, to Bernald "Slim" and Mary (Yurich) Richter. He grew up in Wiota where he attended school and graduated in 1954. While attending high school, he played basketball and baseball, drove the school bus, worked for Henningsen Construction and his Uncle Joe. On September 15, 1954, he joined the United States Air Force, serving during the Korean Conflict. He took military training in San Antonio, Texas, and was then transferred to Sergeant Bluff near Sioux City, Iowa. He was discharged September 15, 1958.

On April 28, 1956, he married Mardell Christensen. To this union six children were born: Deb, Donna, Doug, Darla, Darwin and Daryl. Larry worked for Colonial Baking and Wonder Bread Baking companies for 15 years, and then Glacier for 18 years. He also owned the Bait House for 12 years.

In his earlier years he enjoyed bowling on a league and was a little league coach. He loved watching football and baseball, cheering on the Chicago Bears and Atlanta Braves. He also enjoyed playing cards with family and good friends, or relaxing outside in his easy chair on the patio.

Larry is survived by his wife, Mardell; daughters, Deb Gipple of Fort Worth, TX, Donna Stryjewski of Atlantic and Darla (Roy) Richter of Atlantic; his sons, Doug (Darci) Richter of Atlantic, Darwin (Jen) Richter of Atlantic and Daryl Richter of Fort Worth, TX; 10 grandchildren, David and Doug Richter, Crystal Richter, Brian Esbeck, Ashley Richter, Justine Richter, Trent Richter, Bret Dennis, Blake Esbeck and Brandi Esbeck; 10 great-grandchildren, Dylan, Whitney, Lilly, Chase, Chelsie, Skylee, Kaylee, James, Alisya and Willow. Also surviving is his sister, Barb Sisler of Atlantic; brothers, Jr. (Ruth) Richter of Atlantic, Ron (Ellen) Richter of Aurora, CO and Bill Richter of Boone, IA; sisters-in-law, Roxanne Richter of Beatrice, NE and Ruth Richter of Atlantic; and brother in-law, Merv (Jeannine) Christensen of Atlantic; as well as many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Slim in 1988 and Mary in 1990; his parents-in-law, Ted Christensen in 1997 and Gladys Christensen in 1996; his brothers, Tom Richter in 1996 and Donnie Richter in 2016; his sister, Dorothy Power in 2014; brothers-in-law, Roger Power in 2008, Dick Sisler in 2009, Merlyn Christensen in 2010; sister-in-law, Ellen Richter in 2001; grandson, Christopher in 1979; nephews, Carlin Richter in 1983, Scott Sister in 1993 and Jeff Richter in 2015.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials be made to the family for a later designation.

Visitation with family will be from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m., with a prayer service at 4:45 p.m., Thursday, February 11, 2016, at Hockenberry Family Care in Atlantic.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, February 12, 2016, at SS Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Atlantic with burial in the SS Peter & Paul Catholic Cemetery in Atlantic.
