Larry Smith

Larry Otis Smith, 78, of Anita, Iowa, passed away at his residence in Anita Monday, May 3, 2021.

Larry was born October 31, 1942, to Otis and Hyla (Robinson) Smith. Larry grew up on the family farm near Wiota. He attended Wiota schools, graduating from Wiota High School with the class of 1960.

After graduation, on October 31, 1961, he married Lorain Marcille Howard in Harlan, IA. Four children were born to this union: Kelly, Kerrie, Tracy, and Brent. After his discharge from military service, they lived in Wiota, then resided in Omaha for three years until they settled on the farm just outside of Anita. Lorain died December 14, 2000. Larry lived on the farm until 2009 when he moved to his current residence in town.

Larry enjoyed all aspects of agriculture and livestock. Growing up he enjoyed showing cattle in 4-H. That passion was passed down to his children who also showed cattle in 4-H when they were younger. He also enjoyed spending countless hours at numerous livestock auctions and special sales in Anita. Often, he would watch cattle auctions online in the comfort of his home. Also, throughout his life, he especially enjoyed fishing.

He is survived by his children: Kelly (John) Snyder, Kerrie (Jordie) Harrell, Tracy (Brad) Suhr, Brent (Malisa) Smith; 11 grandchildren; Makayla (Sean) Smith, Makarlie Smith, Dalton Smith, Makenzie Smith, Makia Smith, Dillon Snyder, Nathan Snyder, Kory (Ashley) Harrell, Cameron (Grace) Harrell, Kristi (Ryan) Metheny, and Shane (Kaycee) Suhr; 6 great-grandchildren, Cooper, Barrett, Haidyn, Kinley, Kinnick and Karsten; and sister-in-law, Linnea (Mike) Murphy.

Preceded in death is his wife, Lorain; parents, Otis and Hyla; and three sisters and two brothers.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family where they will be designated according to Larry’s wishes.

A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Sunday, May 9, 2021, at Oakwood Cemetery in Lewis, IA.

Services are being planned at Hockenberry Family Care in Anita, Iowa.
