Leonard Andersen

Leonard Hartvig Andersen, 91, of Atlantic, Iowa, passed away Thursday, December 26, 2013, at the Cass County Memorial Hospital.


He was born on September 11, 1922, to Alfred and Agnes (Hansen) Andersen in Audubon County, Iowa. Leonard was raised in the Exira and Kimballton area. He graduated from the Exira High School in 1940. During WWII, Leonard served as a radar/radio operator on a B-17 in the United States Air Corps. He served in the military from February 10, 1943 to December 9, 1945. After his discharge from the military, Leonard moved to Atlantic, IA. He was united in marriage to Marilyn Schneider on August 18, 1946, at the Little Brown Church in the Vale located in Nashua, Iowa.

Leonard owned and operated Bell Cleaners in Atlantic for over 40 years. He was a member of the United Church of Christ in Atlantic. He was also a member of the Atlantic Elk's Lodge No. 445 and the Atlantic V.F.W.

Leonard enjoyed the outdoors where he spent countless hours tending to his garden and taking care of the yard. He also enjoyed dancing and playing cards. Leonard also had a passion for cooking and baking. He thoroughly enjoyed preparing holiday meals for family and friends. However, his greatest love was spending time with his family.

Leonard is survived by his sons, Larry Andersen of Olathe, KS and Derald (Brenda) Andersen of Atlantic, IA; his grandchildren Brett (Amy) Andersen of Overland Park, KS, Brian (Megan) Andersen of Omaha, NE, Daniel (Leah) Andersen of Lee's Summit, MO, and Sarah (Isaac) Andersen of Atlantic, IA; his great-grandchildren, Nora, Lily, Talon and Colton and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Alfred and Agnes Andersen, his wife, Marilyn, and his brother Norman (Sis) Andersen.
Visitation with family will be from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m., on Monday, December 30, 2013, at Hockenberry Family Care in Atlantic, Iowa.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, December 31, 2013, also at Hockenberry Family Care in Atlantic, Iowa, with burial in the Atlantic Cemetery.
